I recently bid on and won a sigma 50-500mm lens. Well when all was said and done the person "kangiwa" shipped an inferior sigma 150-500 lens. The lens has either scratched interior glass or junk in it that shows up on the photo's. I let them know they shipped the wrong lens and that I would return this and wanted the one I paid for. They have refused to send that one. "Bait and switch". After checking out the prices it seems the one that I bought sells for much more but mine was won on a bid. I think "kangiwa" just did the bait and switch because they didn't get what they wanted for the lens. I got it for $350 when others are asking for anywhere between $700-$1600. Has anyone had a similar experience? They should be required to send the one I bought since after the bid it is legally mine right? Any hints on what to do to get my lens? I've already contacted ebay and all they say is return it for a refund but I want my lens.

Ebay and PayPal will gladly refund your money, and then charge the seller. You are not going to get "your" lens (if it ever existed).

Based in my experience with eBay, this is typical for eBay. And don't expect any help from PayPal if you used them. The eBay rule is 'bait&switch' both during & after the 'shafting.'

I know I am in the minority but I got burned a couple of times on Ebay and as a result I do not buy any items there. I know this is not at all helpful to you but don't have anything to offer. Everything I tried with Ebay resulted in failure.

Is it possible that the 50-500 was a typo and they meant to type 150-500? Just wondering, but in any case you should get a refund and never trust that person again AND give them very bad feedback. That's how eBay works. You give them bad feedback and they get less bids on stuff and get less money. Sorry you didn't get what you thought you were bidding on.

Disagree completely. I've only ever disputed two transactions on eBay and got a prompt and courteous refund on both occasions. Vetting the seller helps, of course, but eBay and PayPal back up the transactions. In fact, I am a little reluctant to sell on eBay because they seem to bend over backwards on behalf of the buyer.

I bought both my Nikon D5500(used) and Nikon 70-300 lens (new) on EBay, as well as many other things, from coins and pottery to electronics. I have had a couple of things that arrived broken and we're immediately and easily were replaced by the sellers. Yes, there is always a possibility of a scam by disreputable sellers but the feedback system works and both Ebay and PayPal have always been excellent with returns, rebates and replacements. I always look at Ebay 1st when shopping for anything. Read the feedback.

Be sure to file a negative evaluation on the seller. You help others by doing so.

That's been my experience as well. Bad feedback needs to be read carefully. It's usually not too difficult to read between the lines and distinguish the "professionally disgruntled" scammers from those with a legitimate problem.

I've bought hundreds of photographic items, antiques, fountain pens, and other stuff, and had only two bad experiences, both of which were promptly resolved in my favor. Caveat emptor, of course, but they are generally on the buyer's side.
