"Color" "Texture" "Value"

My sister noticed the scene and asked
me for a "David Hockney". There was
nobody IN the pool, so this was just as
close to a DH as I could manage ATM.

Anywho, for me the Hockney request
was just a point of departure. I believe
this stands on it own, not on the coat
tails of DH.

"Isolation"

The article expounds mostly on the graphic
aspects of compositions. Composition-wise,
I looooove that this shot is such a flagrant
violation of so many guidelines. But as an
example of "isolation" it seems to hold up
well enuf. Plus, it also relies a bit on color
as the red scarf leads us thru all the crazy
clutter to the subject.

"Size" and "Color" team up here
on an expanse of whiteness.

I do not know this trio. Was just
a chance encounter.

"Value" for balance.

Lotta "Texture" but texture
is just a garnish, not really
involved in the balance.

"Value" & "Texture"

Genuine natural lighting.
No artificial ingredients.

I don't hardly ever wake
up early enuf to see any
dawn light, so I found it
kinda intriguing ...

I know in my case it's luck. I never heard of these 7 tips- or balance before yesterday. But when I read it, it clicked... I never heard of the rule of 3rds till about 2 years ago...
I am going to stick to my #1 rule first-- Get the shot. Trust your eye...
Get 2 or 3 if possible, playing with camera settings up and down...
Later in edit, on the computer, you can really concentrate on your art..
Digital allows that, more than ever...
I am not saying don't worry about it in the field- Landscapes and inanimate objects aren't going anywhere.
But birds in flight, sports, action shots-- you have to get the shot 1st...

Well thank you Judy! But I'm struggling actually to figure out why I like some of my shots much more than others - perhaps it has partly to do with an unconscious application of balance principles. Hhmmm, application or sheer luck?
