Friends and I are taking Capt. Mike's boat tour to photograph eagles in March. He is located in Richmond, VA. We'll be on the boat 7AM-9AM two consecutive days. That will leave us an entire day after the first boat ride to photograph in the area. Could use any suggestions as to wildlife/nature photo opportunities in the area. Thanks in advance.

As you will be in the southern part of Richmond,
Take a look at The Metro-Richmond-Zoo.
It's a little south of the city but if you like to photograph Animals...
As far as animals go that's a wonderful place to visit.

Capt. Mikes boat ride is very nice.
My wife & I got some beautiful Eagle pictures with him.

The James River and its various walks and parks are great photo ops. Also, Monument Avenue has many older homes and monuments that are photo worthy. If you have transportation, the Lewis Winter Gardens are worth a visit.

UT Mike, I believe it's the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and, you're right, it's a great place for pictures, especially in the spring.

You are correct and some of us do not notice what auto correct does to our text - thanks for catching.

I lived in Richmond for 22 years. I would recommend going to Maymont Park. There's so much to photograph there. There's the Italian garden, Japanese garden, the petting zoo, the bear exhibit.

oldart already mentioned Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens - another great place.

Here are some photos I took in Maymont Park.

Dutch Gap has a great trail that might interest you! Not too far from where you're gonna be, but you'd have to get back over to I95 and come south a few miles. The trail is about 5 miles I think and mostly flat. Here's a website for information:

Something else that might interest you is that you're not too far from several plantations along the James, just east of where you'll be.

And don't neglect the opportunities to photograph the three highest politicians in the area. They are frequently seen giving explanations for their past indiscretions. This might seem a little off topic, and I would not have mentioned it had the Devil made me say it!

The James River Park System has lots of trails along the river. Near downtown there is a floodwall with several nice trails. For historical interest, Williamsburg's restored area is just an hour away.

Go east and there's Jamestown, Yorktown Williamsburg as some have mentioned. Go west and there's Charlottesville and Shenandoah National Park/Skyline Drive.

I second Lewis Ginter, especially if you like plants/macro. March is a tad early though as you may suspect. My experience at Maymont has been less, it is a large park, the animals are captive - including a (sad) pair of Eagles.
Capt Mike is a lot of fun and the Eagles are always there on the James. Each couple has their own territory. Practice well your hand held BIF techniques before you go. Tri/Mono support is of no use. You may find the boat movement also adds softness and is unavoidable. A lot of deletes. Eagles are lazy by nature and sit in the trees until he gets them to come down. Also will see Kingfishers and Osprey. Enjoy.
