I just get my youngest daughter or one of my Grand kids to either show me how or do it for me.

I use an app called "Teracopy" Drag and drop.
It will show you the progress, and check for errors.

OP says he is using a Mac and Teracopy is only for PC, unless the Mac version is hiding somewhere and I can't find it!

The files should copy to the new format. It's a feature of most disk operating systems.

Gene51’s suggestion is probably the correct answer, but any time files are moved to a different storage device and can’t be read (or written to), understanding the file system in use is a basic question just to exclude it as a potential issue. For example (and not suggesting that is the issue here) files written on an ExFAT file system storage device aren’t supported in older versions of Mac OS X (anything prior to 10.6.5).

Hello friends,

Here is my situation: I got all my photos in external HD “A” that I suspect faulty. I’ve got external HD “B” brand new. I click, drag and release all my folders into B (about 2 hours transferring)

I connect B to my Mac OS X but LightRoom 6.6 does not seem to recognize it and show all my folders with and ? sign.

I hope there is a simple solution since I am almost computer illiterate but I can follow simple, step-by-step directions.

Thank you for your help

Hello friends, br br Here is my situation: I got ... (show quote)

From what you say, you have already moved the folders to the new B drive. Now you need to help LR to find them.

On the left-hand side of the LR screen, there are several major categories. First is Navigator, second is Catalog, third is Folders, and the last one is Collections.

Folders is where your Master LR folder should be, as this is where you can organize your images in whatever system you choose.

The method that Gene suggested is based on having all your images and their individual folders grouped together in one Master Folder, which typically a person will name something simple like My LR Photos. This is the folder to right-click on in the LR menu. Then you will see a screen where you can navigate to the new location on B drive. The list that appears is fairly long, and the option you want is about 5 from the bottom [Update Folder Location]. It may be in a different location for your version of LR, but that is where it is in the newest, LR Classic CC.

Hope this helps.

Susan

If you're using LR and the folder you want to move is in the LR catalog, it's always best to move these folders using LR. That way, LR updates it's catalog after the move.

Others have mentioned this, but simply put, LR now does not know where your files are located since you moved them off of drive A. So while in LR's Library module, you have to click on the files and tell LR where they are. Don't fret because this is a common occurrence with folks that move files outside of LR. That's why you are getting a question mark beside each file--LR has lost the location connection. By the way, you are on a Mac and a lot of folks did not catch that. So make sure that you do NOT follow any instructions given to you by a PC guy, as they may not work or worse yet, really mess something up. I labelled my external HD with a number and I am now up to number 7. It was easier for me than using a letter.

Thank you to everybody. It seem that using a bit of information from each of you I have found the way to do it, but I am not sure it would hold.

1. Both HD connected to USB ports
2. Hight light one folder and click "missing folder"
3. Selected folder and confirm that's the right one
4. For some reminder folders -not detected by new HD- open a brand new folder with same name
5. Move using "Move selected photo to this Folder"

Is this valid? When I open my LR next time will those still be there?

Thank you

Was your LR catalog on the drive you moved from? If so then you need to repoint
LR to the new drive. Go to where it is now located and double click on it (“catalog name”.
lrcat) LR should open and it will remember the new location of the catalog. You should then be able to repoint to the new location of you pictures and LR should open normally in the future.

I have a Mac Book. I usually have 2 external hard drives now to avoid this scenario. Have you thought about downloading files into one hard drive and then creating a primary backup with Lightroom onto another hard drive. Memory is cheaper than ever. I have had too many hard drives from reputable companies die and I only have enough actual computer memory to keep the post processed pictures. I know there are easier ways, but I am computer illiterate. I download from the memory card onto one hard drive into a file named by date. I then import via LR into the second drive from the first. I use the LR functions to sort photos from the second external drive. I’m sure there are much, much better ways to backup, but I know that I have the pictures secure. It takes computer time, but it takes very little of my time to drag and drop into a file and then import with Lightroom onto the other drive.

I am PC based. I have 2 1TB SSD (Crucial) drives in a 2 bay docking station (Sabrent). The SSD in drive bay A is my master and used for all LR editing. The SSD in drive bay B is my backup. On a regular basis I backup from drive A to drive B.

I opted for a straight copy from A to B for backup as opposed to any backup apps. Most of those backup to a vendor unique (packed) file format and need to be "Recovered" to verify that the backup operated correctly. With the SSD drives the copying (~ 120 GB) from one to the other takes ~30 minutes. I then use an app Beyond Compare to verify the contents of both drives are identical.

It seems to be working well for me so far.

Thanks... will take a look at this. I usually use FreeFileSync, an open source app.

What is the "name" of each drive? They have to be the same.

If you did not change the folder hierarchy, then all you really have to do is let LR know that the top level folder location is on a different drive. In Library, Folder View, right click on the top level folder and select "update folder location". If you are consistent and put things on the drive in an organized fashion, LR should find all of the folders and images.

What makes you think the older drive is failing?

This is the most direct and simple way given you have already copied the files to a new external drive. Alternately you could have from the start simply mirrored the original "A" drive and then replaced it with the new mirrored drive.
