Also Gene if I right click in top folder I've got:

Find Missing Folder
Remove
Show Parent Folder
Export Folder as a Catalog

but nothing as "update folder location"

Thanks

Go up to the top of the hog and click on search, put in the box the following (without the quotes): "why do I get the question mark in lightroom" and hit search, and have a look at some of those topics. Also, put in the search bar this: "how do I move files in lightroom?" (again, without the quotation marks).
Hope that helps.

The "move" function works like the "Copy" does. Just more so.
It will copy the files over. Tjen verify they're an exact copy. THEN delete the old files.
I also like asking me if I want to over write, renamw, or skip files with the same name.
Separately, or as a group. I also like "stacking" operations consecutively: I can say do this group first, then this group, then those files. I'll have 3 icons on the bottom, with the percentages done listed there. I can also concurrently process, as sometimes I find a few more files and I can do them now.
I never tried it in XP. I used it in 7, 8 and 10. really liked te way it worked in 8.1.

I copy things manually using Windows using commands at the C prompt. If you were to have both drives connected to your computer using separate usb ports, once you identify the letter name that each is using, you could use the command to copy from one to the other.

Hello friends,

Here is my situation: I got all my photos in external HD “A” that I suspect faulty. I’ve got external HD “B” brand new. I click, drag and release all my folders into B (about 2 hours transferring)

I connect B to my Mac OS X but LightRoom 6.6 does not seem to recognize it and show all my folders with and ? sign.

I hope there is a simple solution since I am almost computer illiterate but I can follow simple, step-by-step directions.

Thank you for your help

Did you move folder within LR or did you drag and drop outside of the LR environment

1.) Import Images from the new drive just like you did before. This is the slow, reliable method.
2.) Then, in LR, remove the old, missing photos. This might be done by the folder. That would be faster.
Never did this before but about to, soon enough.

You moved the images by "drag n drop" using the OS... now, Lightroom shows "???". That is because when you moved them, you did so outside of LR so LR doesn't know where they are located. You need to try to open an image in LR, then search for the new file location. Basically, you are telling LR where the images are now located. Once you've done one, LR should find the rest, as long as they are all on the same drive.

The best way to move image files is within LR. You still do the drag-n-drop, but LR keeps the directory current and you don't have to point LR to the new location.

I do it all the time, but I copy them and make sure the move has gone right before I delete them on the other drive.

What is the "name" of each drive? They have to be the same.

They shouldn't have to be...

If the drives are in the same computer, and both are accessible, it's a matter of copying from the old drive to the new drive. Once copied and backed up, destroy the old drive. If flaky, you don't want it around, and you want to do this ASAP.

The process can take several hours... just transferred my old files to my new computer build... left it overnight and it was still copying in the morning (400K files).
Make sure you can do without the use of your machine for the time required.

What is the file system on the new drive? (FAT32?, AF-S? exFAT?, etc...)

you click on the question mark and tell it where the files are. if you moved the file to another drive then tell LR that via the Question mark. LR will go find them, anytime you move a folder you will have to tell LR that. you have to do this for all folders

The files should copy to the new format. It's a feature of most disk operating systems.

John,
Perhaps you missed that he has a Mac! No File Explorer!

Method 1:

Plug your external HD's into your PC, using "File Explorer" and work out which letter each hard drive has been allocated.

Open up the HDD where the file you wish to transfer is located.

Right-click the file, scroll down to "Send to" and then select the HDD you wish to send it to.

Done.

Method 2:

Open up "File Explorer"

Open up the HDD you want to transfer the file from.

Drag that file to the HDD listed in the left-hand column you wish to move it to.

Done.
