Me too. He was pretty much a one trick pony when it came to acting. There were a lot of better actors in his day.

Didn’t he wear a robe, of sorts, in “Genghis Khan”? One of Hollywood’s greatest achievements in casting?

I think the greatest 'Uh?' in casting came from his role as the centurion at the crucifixion... "Surely, this maaaan waaas the son of God..."

All John Wayne movies were good Masculine roles.

There is a long list of great actors and movies that were passed over for an Oscar. Some are legitimate complaints, and some are sour grapes. There are a lot of great actors, but only one Oscar per year. I guess that's what the Lifetime Achievement Award is for.

Not many industries put on a four-hour extravaganza to tell the world how good they are.

That film had a high cancer death rate among cast and crew. It was filmed downwind from a nuclear test site.

From memory John Wayne did wear a robe in the film called “The Greatest Story Ever Told” (1965) in that film he was the centurian at the base of the cross holding Jesus, wearing a robe, he stabbed Jesus with the spear of destiny, the weather changed drastically, it’s at this point that you have start speaking John Wayne, “he shorely wus the sun a God”

I remember a NYT film reviewer's snide comment about a John Wayne new film, about the cast it went "and with Jon Wayne playing John Wayne." Why has that stuck with me for about 70 years. Aren't we old farts supposed to be forgetful.

I believe that movie was the "Searchers" Jerry, shot in the deserts of Nevada.

This is true, though... I liked a lot of his movies, but honestly, he played John Wayne in every one of them!

Some critics complained that John Wayne was always John Wayne in all his movies, meaning that he didn't always transform into the character. I don't agree. The Quiet Man was excellent as was Maureen O'Hara and Victor McLaglen all were excellent in their parts.
Lets not forget the Ladies Bette Midler certainly deserved an Oscar for the Rose, she literally became Janice Joplin on screen. I think she got robed.

To win an Oscar today, it has to fit in the category of Humanity. Most of the time.

The Quiet Man --- probably one of the best movies to come out of Hollywood. From the casting, to the music to the photography, it was spectacular
