So that it may be impossible to get both squirrels in focus regardless of setting.

If the question was how to get depth of field on auto that is very difficult because the camera adjust all the settings. My suggestion would be to shoot in aperture mode and use a small aperture and adjust your iso accordingly, use a tripod if available. Hope this helps
