Why no collar included

I asked Canon why there was not a tripod collar included with their 70-200 f4, IS, II.

There answer was:
"We do have several versions of the EF 70-200mm lens as you may have noticed. The version you mentioned does not come with the Tripod Collar, while the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM does come with it."

This is because the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is wider and weighs more than the EF 70-200mm f/4L. Its dimensions are 3.50 x 7.83" and it weighs 3.28 lb. In contrast, the EF 70-200mm f/4L comes in at 2.99 x 6.77" and weighs 1.55 lb.

"Our engineers concluded that a lens collar could offset the size and weight of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM but that it was not necessary for the EF 70-200mm f/4L."

It would narrow the price difference.

Are they saying it is unnecessary on the f4 model? If so why advertise it as a suggested add-on?

Nikon does the same thing with the 70-200 f4. It is much lighter than the 2.8. but eBay has them brand new, identical to the brand name ones for $15.00.

They don't offer it with the 70-300 4-5.6L either. I seldom use the collar anyways on my 70-200 2.8L II. With the right settings the IS takes care of the rest. Buy an aftermarket collar if you feel you need it. The collar for the 2.8L is included in the price and it's substantially more money.

That is basicly what they are trying to say - tho, knowledgeable photographers KNOW better ! I had a tripod collar with mine and used it most of the time so I could use it with my monopods, bodypods, and carpods.- and most certainly when using a 1.4X with it ! - tho, my 70-200 was the non-IS version - even If I had IS, I would not trust it.

Third party tripod collars start at about $10 on ebay - the one I used was $12.

Most people would/should be using the tripod collar when using the 70-200 as a close-up/macro lens - which it is very GOOD at .

I looked on eBay, some were plastic or didn't say metal/plastic.

Metal one for $19 stated no returns...?

You can always be unhappy buying the real thing. Or always be unhappy buying the cheap knockoff. I just came back from having my older non IS f/4 on my tripod with quick release plate on the collar. A must for using the lens as a landscape lens for sunrise pictures along Lake Michigan.

The ones I've seen are metal, identical to the original except for not having the brand name stamped on them. I have purchased 3 of them one for Nikon 300 f4, nikon 20-200 2.8 (that didn't ship with a collar & nikon 70-200 f4. All perform as advertised. As far as the "no return" on eBay, eBay WILL honor a request even if the merchant won't. Why not take a chance for $15?

This one looks good. If you scroll down the page, there are quite a few more, some even say they're made of metal. I'm not sure of Canon, but Nikon kills us with the price of the RT-1 tripod ring.
HAPPY SHOOTING!

If it were "not necessary", then why include the proper groove needed for one????
Its for the same reason Canon never provides lens hoods with non-L lenses. They make obscene profit margins selling you these "unnecessary" accessories.

You're correct! Most people have figured it out & the Chinese are taking care of it. It's amazing how identical these parts are! As for me, I don't mind saving a few hundred bucks on something I can return easily, anyway.
