Don't think he was happy when I took his picture.

If looks could kill. Nice portrait. Looks like he was having a rough day. Maybe a cup of coffee would be a good jester for a smile. Mahalo for sharing.

Good shot. I’d call him “Sir.”

I like to think he was giving you what he thought you wanted; a no-nonsense NYC street cop look. One thing's for sure, when the you-know-what hits that proverbial fan, I want this guy at my back. :)
Great shot.

Did you ask if you could take his picture? I understand that some cities don't want people taking pictures of their officers as they don't want them targeted.

My son is a cop and a part time portrait photographer. He does both work (documentation and PR) and wedding/family events photos of his co-workers. I’ve noticed that he and his friends have a I-mean-business look that they put on as part of their uniform. But when they are out of uniform or off duty they are more relaxed. It is hard to relax when you are alert for life threatening situations.

A little piece of advise. NEVER shoot someone looking to the camera without first sporting a big smile and asking permission to do so. Many times a brief conversation is all that is needed to make the subject happy, comfortable and willing to pose.
This is even more important when photographing people like the military or police.

There appears to be a smile in his eyes as he poses.
