It appears that not even mirrorless can save us from the evil intruders!

Wonder if there is a market for a DSLR or Mirrorless with the ability to make a phone call.

Sorry not buying into that hype unless there is a substancial improvement in lens speed. For most people they are already happy with a phone camera. But high quality fine art on a phone will be hard to replicate.

A couple of years ago I read a review of a phone that had such a good camera that the reviewer referred to it as "A high end P&S with a built in cell phone."

I agree with both of you but I'll lay odds there are some folks who will believe this and, the way social media has perfected the art of pounding anything into the ground, be ready to jump ship.

The two years is most likely off but the direction and percentage is probably correct, then it will settle at level of commercial and hard core users. We have two generations now growing up whereby a cell camera (they seldom use it as a phone) is all they consider is needed. I travel a fair amount and I see vast majority of younger generations just using their phones.

But I have also talked to a lot of them that ask "How can I get better pictures?" or "Why aren't my pictures as good as your pictures?"
I explain that I am using cameras and lenses that cost multiples of the price of the best cell phone in the world and are much larger and heavier. Some say they will look into getting a camera, others look horrified at the cost and size/weight they would have to carry around.

Robert, you make a couple good points. I feel that the weight you mention, not necessarily the costs, will be the major deterrent to acquiring a DSLR or even a mirrorless system. I think technology is racing forward so fast that it will soon take only a keen eye to tell the difference between a "cell" and a medium format camera - not everybody is going to want to blow their pix up to billboard size or even 20x30. But soon, the weight of our existing DSLR's will seem even more outrageous than it already does, comparatively, to the new tech, and I think its superiority today will diminish tomorrow. Don't forget, we have millennials now who don't think twice about shelling out almost $1,500.00 for an iPhone XS Max.
And I read recently that Samsung is trying to stuff 50mp into their new cellphone release.
I'm happy that I like my gear 'cause it will all go down with me.
Cheers

No skin off my nose. As long as someone is producing a camera/lens that can do what I need, I don't care if it's a mirrorless, DSLR, 4/3, Smart Phone, Dumb phone, or whatever comes down the pike.

I remember when I was told you can't shoot weddings with 35mm, then I was told that digital will never take the place of film. Now, they are saying, cameras are going away. Whatever, along with most people, I'll find a way to survive the next bit of "progress"

I think you make the argument for the 50% reduction too - they will look into DSLR cameras, then price, weight, accessories and upkeep will result in NO sales. Plus you have possibly talked to dozens, I was referring of thousands so sales still drop until they level to old farts & commercial work.

I saw the same happen in CB radios when everyone got cell phones; same in ham radio attendance/operators when the Internet took over with Facebook, Twitter, etc.
