I took this photo in 1996 while walking along the beach by the Sanibel Lighthouse. The great blue heron suddenly landed in the mangrove just ahead of me. I snapped the shot with my Canon EOS 10S using Fuji Velvia. I was never fully satisfied with the shot until a few years later I was playing around with it using some free Photoshop plugins that I got somewhere. The final result was this. I printed it and it now hangs in my home.

This works for me on several levels: the prominence of the bird immediately catches my eye, the other elements establish a setting, the white space between the image and the thin line border helps prevent it from feeling too busy or crowded. Love it!

This photo was masterfully processed. It deserves a place in your home. It’s rare that I have no comments as usually I think every photo could be improved and all things considered, well, there’s nothing that would make it meaningfully better.
