Rectangular Monitor Frustration

I recently got a rectangular monitor (about 21 x 13). I find that I can't stand it. My photos are distorted into wide, squat images - it's like looking in the funhouse mirror. I've switched back to my old square monitor where photos and documents look normal. It's an Asus VP239HP 23. I can't find any settings to keep things in the proper perspective. I emailed many times for help but haven't gotten any satisfaction.
Any thoughts or suggestions on this? Thanks in advance!

I have dual monitors, one square, one wide, with no problem using either.
What are you doing to experience the problem?

As far as I know there is no square monitor although I wish to have square monitor. The ones that come closest to square is the 5:4 type which typically has resolution of 1280x1024. Your new monitor has resolution of 1920x1080 and if you set your computer to this resolution the image will not be distorted.

Closer to square than rectangular. I know what & why Siena is referencing.
I call it square also.

I looked at the manual and there is a setting called "quick fit" function.
Not being able to see what it does, makes suggestions difficult.
Really need to know what application you are using to possibly help, unless someone here has the same series monitor (VP239).

Side note - by any chance does your computer support two monitors?

To everyone who replied, THANK YOU. I quick reply to some of the questions:
Probably can support two monitors but don’t want two.
I use LR and ACDSee.
Even reading a Word doc. is painful.
I will reset the resolution.

Thanks again to everyone. This site is the best!

A square is a rectangle, but only a rectangle with equal sides is a square.

Technically yes (a rectangle with four equal sides), but most people just call it a square.

Probably the key. Change the monitor resolution in the computer.
Isn't that usually detected and automatically adjusted?

Look at IILAMA ProLite B2280WSD, @ 47 x 30 cm. A more 'square' format.

Are there any controls that allow you to switch to 16X9, or 'letterbox?
