Since torn down for safety. Mid '80s photo 35mm AE-1
Nice. I see lots of buildings that should have been torn down, but putting up a "KEEP OUT" sign is cheaper.
I'm sure it was a "fat finger" mistake but it actually is called the "Standby Mine". Used to ride our dirt bikes to the mine on our way to the Rochford gas station. The old gas station is now called Rochford Mall or Small of America.
Very nice - I love shots like this of old buildings, homes and barns. Thanks for sharing.

I loved photographing the Standby. It was a shame it deteriorated to that point. It would have been great if it could have been restored, but I suppose costs would have been prohibitive. However people kept entering it and it was a liability issue. Part of Black Hills history that is gone along with many more historic sites.

Exactly!! That is why it was torn down because people didn't obey the signs.
I like the Ansel Adams quote.
You got it. Thought I had corrected it, didn't take. Was there last summer as the store was getting ready for their summer celebration. Cousins have CCC cabin at Black Fox.
Hmm this 1 is close to home , nice shot . My family has lived in and around Rochford for well over a 100 years and my Grandfather was the last care taker for the mine back in the 30's . There were fatality's at the mine as with most mines but the last 1 was in the 60's when some airmen from Ellsworth decided to investigate the shaft , unfortunately they trespassed and the rope they used was to short and 1 plunged to his death . There is still gold ore on the property but tends to be in high grade pockets which many mining ventures have tried to connect to make it a going concern but alas the bigger company's need to make millions to make it worth while . Just a side note there is local opposition to the current search ( not in my backyard attitude ) but nobody wants to live in a tepee . By this I mean your everyday lives depend on mining , there is gold in your computer , phones , camera's , Tv's , not to mention the foundations , nails , and the wiring of your homes are mining products and lets not forget the metal in all vehicle's that give us transportation , just something to think about .
Drove by it many times on our trips to the Hills. My husband hunted the area around Mystic for awhile and now they go by the old Moon campground. We stop @ the Rochford bar often just to see the old place. Pretty neat.
We have the John Green print of this old mine hanging in our house. Thanks for sharing!
