Will be in Phoenix for awhile. Do you have any suggestions for photo opportunities?

I don't know your exact dates, but I highly recommend the Heard Museum World Championship Hoop Dance Contest Feb. 9 & 10. At WestWorld (westworldaz.com) currently, until Jan. 20, is the BARRETT JACKSON CAR AUCTION. Also at WestWorld in Feb. is the 64th Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show.

WELL worth the drive to Tucson to the Sonoran Desert Museum. Make it a weekend trip and drive to Bisbee and spend the night in the old Copper Queen Hotel.

A good day hike (best to avoid weekend crowds and best in cooler weather) is just southeast of Apache Junction (a short drive from Phoenix) - the Peralta Trail into the Superstition Mountains. In springtime the cactus flowers can b e spectacular. This trail lets you see the whole wild variety of cacti and other plants in the Sonoran Desert, not to mention deer, coyotes, owls, etc.

Plan on a weekend trip to Sedona - or add a day to visit the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

It's been a long time since I was in Phoenix, but there were a lot of buildings, trees, people, streets, cars, sidewalks, parking meters, street lamps, traffic signals … you name it.

Almost forgot, astrophotography in the winter desert is phenomenal if the conditions are right. (This should have gone below the next comment, don’t know how I did that)

If I remember right, I believe the Music Museum is in Phoenix. Some of the instruments from Asia and Africa are wild. You also can see an Elle Fitzgerald gown and play set, and some fun rock and roll memorabilia. I was shocked at how much we enjoyed it, especially all the instruments and music making devices from around the world. Photo ops are dependent on what lights your fire. Museums can be fun. Sometimes there a bust for me, sometimes not. A favorite picture is from the Smithsonian, a Culture that Fleming used to isolate penicillin. Another is from the national aquarium in Baltimore of an eye level Camon staring me down at water level.

Since you say “will be in Phoenix for awhile” I agree with billnikon’s suggestion for TripAdvisor. Made the trip for 10 days 2-3 years past and had plenty of time to enjoy Phoenix, Tucson, Tombstone, and Sedona....much to see and do. The Sonoran Desert Museum is a must see and has great opportunities for many varied raptor shots. Also, Jerome and Cottonwood are two western towns in the vicinity worth a day or two. If you enjoy train excursions, the Verde Canyon Wilderness Route out of Clarkdale is very nice. Regretfully, I did not make Bisbee or Grand Canyon, The latter because mid-winter, but will catch them next time. Too many photo ops to mention and no shortage of good food venues.

I spent a week in Phoenix at Christmas time. I'd strongly urge you to ride the Apache Trail and to go to Sedona and take a Pink Jeep tour. If you have some "non-photography time," take in the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) and Desert Botannic Garden. MIM is the most amazing museum I've ever seen. This was my third visit, and I'm not a musician (I can barely play the radio.).

BTW, depending on where you stay, Sedona is about an hour-and-a-half north of Phoenix but is worth every inch you have to travel. If you do decide to do a Pink Jeep tour, make your reservations now. We took a two hour tour that started at 1:30, and it was wonderful. The Apache Trail is a "do it yourself" tour, but it's very straightforward and provides amazing photo ops.

Enjoy!

Climb Camelback Mountain and panorama photograph the whole valley, 360 degrees. The Cardinals stadium is an interesting architectural study. Some amazing photos of wild horses on the Salt River have been showing up here, don’t know more details than that. There are several more mountain preserve areas for flora and fauna. North Mountain preserve and South Mountain are two off the top of my head. Phoenix zoo is pretty good, Wildlife World Zoo on the west side of the valley used to have pretty uninterrupted views of animals but has been several years since I have been there.
