At the risk of being too political on here, I can’t help myself. So to answer the OP’s question; get yourself a good portrait lens like a Nikon 105 or other brand’s equivalent and go to any political event of your choice and shoot faces.
Use the Canon 500D close-up two element lens on the longest lens that you have. Not really ideal, however, it may be the best option you have for only $75 - $150. I would recommend a macro lens or some extreme closeup lens or filters. I am assuming that you want to try getting detailed shots of some snowflakes.
