[quote=htbrown]?....which in turn were replaced by Nike missiles. None were ever used and the Nike missiles were likely useless except to reassure the civilian population during the cold war.

Two interesting tidbits about those Nike missiles. First, they were controlled by a guy following blips
on a small round radar screen and the control system (before electronic computers) was run with roller microswitches hitting bumps on cam wheels. The object was to explode a nuclear warhead of the Nike close to the incoming missile....a direct hit could not be counted on. Secondly, while observing some disarmed missiles below ground, there were stenciled bits of information applied to some of the panels on the sides. One indicated where the nuclear trigger was located and the other was a warning DO NOT USE A HAMMER IN THIS AREA!!!!! Boy, that gave me a great deal of comfort!

I remember visiting a Nike site when I was in the Boy Scouts, when they were still pretending the missiles were good for something. I was quite impressed when we rode the elevator down into the underground bunker. No one told us not to beat on them with hammers, but then they didn't let us get that near to them, either...

They still have a Nike missile at the Marin headlands, presumably missing its warhead, which they bring out on occasion.

Where is the warhead kept? On what occasion do they bring it out? Where do they display the warhead? Is it active?? The only thing these weapons are good for is to ensure A$$ holes always have that right to be A,,,,,es

Gee, too bad you didn't rise to a position of authority, where you could have made everything perfect. Did you consider that having those missiles took some anxiety out of life for those of us who lived in that era?

If I could have made everything perfect there would not be a need for missiles. Those people who chose to live where they did could go to bed at night dreaming of sugar plums. Any answers to my questions??

Okay, you appear to be a clueless grouch, who cannot even get basic information straight. Look up the answers to your pointless (and moot, btw) questions, and stop pretending.
Done with you, because I don't think you contribute in the spirit of this site.

Since the Park Service has little use for explosive weaponry, I would assume the warhead was retained by the military when the Nike program was terminated. As to the rest of your statement, I can't make enough sense of it to comment.
