I photographed the Women's Collegiate Rugby play-offs in Atlanta last spring.I used 2 lenses-a 70-200mm, and a 100-400mm. The 100-400 was sometimes too long on the short end, but the reach of 400 was handy for "down the field" plays. The 70-200mm was pretty good all around, but sometimes too short on the long end. Your 70-300mm will definitely be a worthwhile choice.

Were you shooting an APS-C or FF? The OP is on an APS-C.

Thanks, man ! And the first in this thread to even bother responding to my post.

I was beginning to think that Americans think the game is all about the scrummage !

Maybe, just maybe no one responded to your post because

1) you are not the OP, and

2) your post did not offer much in the way of specific help to the OP or really add anything that would move the discussion forward.

If you want a reaction to a group of sports shots, rather than insert them in an ongoing discussion you could post them in the Gallery or in the sports forum.

You're an unbelievably opinionated individual, aren't you ?
I posted before you, so was "into the on-going discussion" before you.
Gave the OP at least 6 pointers to help him get started.
“OP was trying to find rugby pics” but couldn't (check his first post).
Wondering how much you know about the game or if you’ve ever photographed it? If you think the pic of a scrum (the most boring aspect) is a “good shot” then you’ve probably little idea of the game and its more exciting photographic opportunities.
Your contribution to the post amounts to camera settings, lens choice, and where to place his focus point.
I came from a differing direction, with much more exciting examples of “what to shoot” than anything you’ve been able to come up with !
But you, being you ...... yeah, I’ve read plenty of your opinions in the past ....... haven’t spotted that, eh what old fella? The Six Nations starts in early Feb. Why don’t you sit in front of a telly and start learning?

The OP wants to take rugby shots, trying to find them was to find guidance

The shots you posted were not that good. You failed to give good context in the shots. Cropped in too tight on others.

Then you cry like a baby because everyone does not rise up to praise your effort. You are just sad.
