A delivery system requires transportation routes and centralized hubs that preclude items from being sent straight from point A to B.

The dummy was probably a computerized scanner.
To err is human, but if you really want to mess something up, use a computer!
Computers don’t mess up - people who program computers do mess up.
I just got a Micro Nikkor 105 F2.8D that I bought 2 weeks ago. The tracking said it was in Atlanta NDC for 4 days and was then sent to a Post Office 16 miles from me instead of my local PO. I went to the other PO and picked it up. Otherwise it would have gone back to the NDC and god knows how long it would have stayed there... This lens was coming from one state away... Florida to Georgia.
Almost all mail handling/routing, regardless of carrier (USPS, UPS, FedEX) is mechanized these days. I’d bet that it’s human eyes and hands that intercept and correct the mis-routed stuff.

Sometimes weather, sometimes interconnecting cargo flights, sometimes error (human or computer), sometimes hand offs between carriers, etc. etc. Logistics has many variables. You just encountered some!

My camera was to be delivered today 1/10 and it was last reported 1/8 in Baltimore, where I live, I just checked and some dummy sent it to Rio.
Not the end of the world.
I had ordered an item that came out of Anaheim to be sent to my home in San Diego county, about a hundred miles away. The tracking showed it went to the east coast then back to me. It was to be for next day delivery. It made it the next day. That was FedEx.

Stupid me, I thought you meant Rio DeJaneiro...
No, I should have added WV in my first post. It could also be Rio Grande

Wow! There’s a “Rio” in WV! Who knew?!?!
So when my wife says we should take a trip to Rio, think I can get away with this?
And it's not crowded, I looked it up and it has about 200 people living there.

It went from NY to a hub in Balto then to WV and back to the hub again and then to the local PO and now out for delivery.

Ideal population for me but she’ll never go for it☹️
I’ve had the same thing happen to me. I’m currently waiting for a package that was sent from a location about 15 miles from me. It was due January 2nd. It went to 3 different postal locations in NJ, then it went by my PO, and is now in San Antonio Tx!
I’m trying to be fair to the USPS, and realize they handle millions of letters and packages daily. Mistakes will be made, but this happens too often. On the 27th of this month a stamp will cost $0.55!
I try avoiding using them as much as possible.
Hope you get your camera back.
