The composition in number 1 is the best.

number two if you could remove the pier and distracting overhanging roof.

#1 - there's a sense of "place" in that image. The others don't have as many reference points.

#1, it puts the trees on the island in context and is more balanced.

I agree with bmac and napabob. If you don't want to change what you have, I'd go with number 1.

Actually none of them. I'd like the last if there wasn't anything on either side and it was in portrait format with more sky.

I play trombone in a local band. We rehearse at a local swim club. At our break I walked out and saw this view. Having only my cell phone with me, there was little control I had over the resulting photo. Which do you think works the best?

Hello photophile,

I pick number one also. Although once you got the picture on your computer. You would have been able to edit it.

Would you think editing would improve the composition?

#1 creates the entire world of the scene. The pier and its reflection jutting in from the right, the wispy trees on the left with the darker foliage on the left edge, and the bit of brown with its dry foliage in the foreground. Now, how are your cloning skills? For me, getting rid of the entire structure on the right would de-clutter the scene and keep focus on the fog and its effect.

To me, the fog would not be seen as fog without the contrast of the clearer points.
