I completely agree with your last sentence. I too have the old f4. It’s my favorite for multiple uses. I also have the old 200 micro. Not near as good as the 105. It mostly gathers dust, as they say. Simple, sturdy & reliable to boot.

Both of the DC lenses are among the sharpest lenses that Nikon has ever made. I have and use both the 105mm and 135mm versions.

I think you mean the 105mm F2.8 Micro or the 105mm F2.8 VR Micro.
Taking closeups of bugs and flowers is called Macro Photohgraphy. There are specialized Macro lenses that will focus up closer than a normal lens. So you want that. FYI - Nikon called their close up lenses Micro lenses but the common term is Macro Lens. Macro lenses can also be used for other types of photography, portrait for example. But normal lenses cannot easily be used for Macro work, because generally they do not have the capability to focus up close.
The Nikon 105mm F2.8 Macro is an excellent lens and also good for portraiture. The VR lens will help with handheld shots but many times people prefer to use a tripod for Macro Work.
