New friends...

...arrived in our garden this morning...two of them. My last friend died a few weks ago and I was so thrilled to see these guys arrive...they are even feeding on the Salvia bush like my old friend used to...
I love how the bnokeh/light turned out in these shots...

Nikon D7100, Sigma 150-600mm @ 600mm. (900mm equivalent) Hand held.

Thank you...it's a New Holland Honey Eater, just one of the many species of honey eaters we have in Australia..

Thank you...these little guys are on the move all the time, a tripod is just too slow and cumbersome...I don't have any issues holding the big lens so I find it easy enough to do. All my BIF are hand held as well, a tripod is just not practical to capture high speed flying birds that might appear from anywhere, even right over head..

Understood. I use a monopod about 90% of the time. I've seen some very nice handheld BIF shots and I can see handheld being faster and easier to follow the action. I guess I'll have to start working on my handheld techniques. Thanks for your response.

I was an archer for many years and put my steady arm down to that...hitting a 4" spot at 90 meters rquired a steady arm...
