Anyone using the new Canon 6D2 built in HDR? Does it work? I am thinking about buying one.

In-camera HDR doesn't really impress me. Probably because I've been playing with the real thing! I've posted an "Amazing HDR" sample.

Never used it as it is only available on JPEG and all I shoot is RAW exclusively. I bracket when conditions require it and blend the images using Aurora HDR.

I like the results from my 5D (still prefer to use PS though, but you can still do that, even when doing in-camera HDR's)! And to the post above, that is all in raw!

I have a Canon 6D and use the in-camera HDR when I think it will be helpful when I do not have a tripod. Visiting a church while on a walking tour is a common scenario where I might use this. The results are usually (but not always) a better image than without using it, but definitely not the same as creating an HDR image with multiple images.

As sb has already mentioned, I too use a 6D (not version 2) and use the HDR sometimes in some tricky lighting situations. It helps but as already mentioned, the camera's output for HDR is JPG which limits post processing. Play with it and see how it goes. :-)

using the camera HDR is like taking pictures with cheep I phone. Not close to the standard of the camera and a processing software.

Canon Lee,
I don't use the 6D but I have had experience using in-camera HDR on the 7D Mark II. The images are decent and can capture the necessary information to save the day. The final image is a JPEG which can be a problem. However, you can certainly take the three or 5 images taken and later combine them in your favorite software outside the camera. I have done that with Affinity software and it is a better image than that produced in the camera.
I shoot in both JPEG and RAW and have not yet combined the JPEGs and then combined the RAWs with Affinity to see what format is produced.
Good luck,

I have the 6D2 and the HDR does work but not as dramatically as you can produce in PP with several images in RAW. There are some creative filters inside the camera programing but I don't use them as I have been wanting real looking scenes but with an expanded dynamic range. I rarely use it but like that I have it in the camera. That it only works on JPEG photos is not an issue as I by necessity have to produce JPEGS for my employer. If/when I produce a HDR for my own artistic purposes I may use the in camera HDR but also take a series of individual images in RAW to hedge my bets and compare and contrast the results. I know you are on the fence about the 6D2. Buy it. One of the features I have used several times it the wireless control I have through my cell phone app. This came in handy when I was photographing highly reflective china cabinets where I didn't want to be reflected in the glass/mirrors. So I set up and left the room. The reflection of the camera was minimal and in several photos, easily removed.

The 80D also has it - but have not used it . I HAVE used the the in camera HDR on the Sony A77II - it will do + and - 6EV where the Canon will only do 3 EV. I LIKE the Sony version. Someday, I will break down and use the Canon version......JPEGS are not a problem for me - PP them anyway. Never shoot raw.

I use several brands of bodies. Anyone making a
general, broad statement about in camera HDR is
just another "Online Expert". Not at all disparaging
imagemeister. He's being very specific, thus useful.

In camera HDR varies huuuuugely. On the 5D-2
it barely does anything. On late model Panasonics
it's very effective. On almost ANY E-mount Sony
it's verrrrry effective.

I have a 6D but not a mark-II. Just buy your 6D-2
with a generous return policy and check it out.

Here's a Sony in-camera complete with wondrous
ghosting due to motion. Looooove that when luck
favors it. Other times, not very cool. Anywho, you
can see that the drummer is in a bright and harsh
overhead spot light. The sax player is well forward
of the band, outside of the stage lights, in a much
dimmer space. Sony HDR is very effective. Image
rendering may look a bit odd, but thaz NOT due to
HDR. It's due to ISO 10,000 plus severe cropping
from a fisheye original :-)

Since my 6D MK II is about a month old. I had not used this feature until you mentioned it here in this post Canon Lee. Here is a quick hdr photo In Camera Jpeg SOOC I took of a Lenten Rose in our backyard today. Camera set to +\- 2ev Harsh sun in background shadows in foreground. Just wanted to demonstrate this for you

Good of kcooke to post a shot. But, not so
useful without any HDR "on-vs-off" image
comparison.

Not having a Mark-2 I've made a matched
pair HDR "on-vs-off" with a plain 6D, at the
+/-3EV [max] HDR and acoarst a "+/-0EV".

In addition to the general scene, there are
detail crops showing the detail available in
the shadows when using HDR, detail lost if
using a regular single exposure.

Seems reasonable to believe the newer 6D
Mark-2 should be equal or better than this.
Do be aware that these are without PP and
my cameras are set up to make dull muted
sooc images that NEED some PP. IOW, just
compare the improved DR. Don't think that
Canon HDR always makes uglee sooc pix :-)
