Hi,
Have toyed with going to Fx from DX for my mainly but not exclusively cat photography, however have gotten the chance of a low shutter Nikon d600 ( 8700 ) at £525 a private sale ,seller says it's been back to Nikon and. Had the dreaded Shutter problem sorted, should I buy or not ?

Wonderful Camera, served me well for several yrs. till I upgraded. I had sent mine in for the new shutter also, and never had a problem with it. I have some 80,000 plus shutter clicks on it.

I met a photographer 2 years ago who owned a Nikon D600. The first and only one I've seen. I asked him why didn't he turn it in to Nikon for the D610. His answer was, why should I. My camera works just fine. I couldn't argue with that. That shutter count of 8700 is very low. Some D750s had a shutter issue. I know someone who turned his D750 in to Nikon for a shutter replacement. He praised Nikon for such a rapid fix. Good luck on your decision.

I love my D600. Bought it used and it qualified for the shutter repair so I feel I got an almost new camera.

My first Nikon was a D600. I still have it and use it despite acquiring since then D800, D810, and Z6. The shutter problem was never as big as it was made out to be, but if it has been replaced, it's a definitely a non-issue. If the only camera I had was the D600, I'd still consider myself lucky and be quite happy. Of course there's no guarantees, but it'd pretty hard to go wrong with deal you've found.

Nikon D600 is an excellent camera. I had one but have moved up a notch or two not for any reason except I could while I still was working. I think my photography skills have improved more than the newer camera improved my pictures. I have a very good friend that makes a living as a professional photographer, just 2 months ago moved from the D600 to the D850. He had a tough time spending the money to move up since he and his clients were happy with the quality obtained with the 600. A good camera at a good price for an upgrade to full frame. Next good fast glass will be your next big improvement.

I have been using a D600 since 2013 and see no reason (yet) to upgrade from it. It is far better at its job than I am at mine. I have been fortunate and have had no shutter problem but the D600s did have an issue. Ask if the owner has paperwork supporting his claim of a Nikon shutter repair.

Here are two examples of the camera's ability

Thank you all for the advice, those photos are stunning,I am most impressed, thanks for posting,I think I will take the advice of asking if there's paperwork to back up the shutte change claim.

When I sent mine in Nikon put a black dot on the inside of the tripod screw hole on the bottom of the camera. This doesn't mean the guy owning the camera couldn't put one there.

I'd only buy on ebay. If the camera is not as advertised (eg. shutter serviced, camera in good working order, and no disclaimers relevant to the camera operation), Paypal refunds your money and postage. I've learned to trust Paypal. I wouldn't trust a stranger unless it was through ebay and Paypal. I've had mostly good purchases on ebay. The few that weren't cost me nothing but an email to the seller followed up by an immediate email to Paypal. A few sellers tried to weasel out of it, especially paying for postage both ways, but paypal just took the money and gave to back to me.

Just so you know, I bought mine used from eBay. After I received it, I personally sent it in to Nikon for the shutter replacement. They did not care if I was the original owner or not. They had issued a recall on the camera and honored it regardless of the owner.....

Same here, bought mine from a local party through Craigslist, sent it to Nikon for free and they did a full cleaning and upgrade. Works great, no complaints.

It is a very good camera. I bought mine new from Best Buy after it went on clearance. Saved about a third. I registered it with Nikon and a short while later I received a notice from them wanting to replace the shutter mech. I sent it in and a couple weeks later i got it back. Easy really.
The only complaint I had was in low light, the focus did have some difficulty locking on quickly. So if you are shooting sports under less than ideal lighting, you might have issues.
Conversely, I did an extensive shoot of the Holocaust Museum in D.C. with just ambient light and was quite successful. The museum is very dark as you can imagine. Strobe lighting is not allowed. Shot it entirely hand-held.
