Wasps and flies

Found this Eurpean Wasp in our garden this morning...there was something in the soil that fascinated them and also attracted a group of flies...shot them with my Sigma 150mm macro lens...the flies must have been equidistant from the lens as mostly they are in focus...

Looks like what we call ground hornets here. They build nests in the ground or holes in rock walls. They are EXTREMELY aggressive, love meat and sweets, and have a nasty sting.

Ron, an awesome set of wasps and flies and a DDL really shows the setail.
Not positive what we call them here but the ones that live in the ground are vicious and I need to avoid them. They are totally black. They do look like what we call Yellowjackets in NC.

We know them as yellow jackets - nasty critters but very good shots of them!

Both. Same species, multiple regional names.
Black ones are just called hornets.

I had one sting me inside my ear when I was younger. I had been standing and talking to some girls outside a car at a drive in restaurant. Had to get a needle and use a salve as my ear got twice it's normal size... Hate those buggers...
