Incorrect, Steve.....I’m not sure you get the gist. In the case of steel and specifically China (but not limited to China), China has been subsidizing THEIR steel production while taxing the import of, say, U.S. steel for a long time. THIS has been artificially distorting pricing, making local U.S. buyers pay more for things (like steel), which is a net loss for our economy because we don't have as much money left over to buy other things.

Yes, they have been violating treaties.

Our “tariffs” are a response to their illegal and immoral activity and serve as a way to even the playing field so our companies can FAIRLY compete.....nothing more, nothing less.

You left out part of the story.... by equalizing pricing you get more local (ie U.S. steel) purchased by U.S. buyers, thus adding to OUR economy and hurting the economy of the tariffed country.
Be more honest.

I was completely honest. My thread was started because the president is saying that the "Millions and millions of dollars flowing into the US treasury is China's money". It's not. As for whether tariffs work or not - economists have been debating that for years and that debate is beyond my pay grade. I dealt only with the lie that the president is telling. The president is misleading the public and I will give him credit for understanding how tariffs work; therefore he was lying. If he would stop saying "It's China's money" and explain that it's the buyer that pays the tariff, he might not have as many people applauding his action.

This is not a one item discussion. There are hundred of thousands of items going each way.

My thread deals with only one item ... Look at the title of the thread. The president is lying when he claims that the millions of dollars flowing into our treasury is being payed by China. It isn't; it's our money. That's it. Expanding the thread to thousands of other items does not change the fact that the president is lying every time he claims that China is paying the tariff. I realize the thread has meandered to other items but none of them changes the original fact that I have stated - the president has lied to the public about who pays the tariff he has implemented.

The problem is that tariffs are not a "one item" issue. Irregardless of what was said, China needs to be handled with a hard line. They are not our friend.

IF American companies are buying U.S. steel, THAT activity is running through OUR economy, thus making its way to OUR treasury via taxation, etc.

IF that is happening, then more Americans are or will be working here instead of China and THAT activity will make it through our economy (wages, taxes, purchasing in the country, etc.)

You see, Howard.......money makes it through our economy and it doesn’t mean it’s coming in directly thru the tariff itself.

My thread deals with the lie that the president is telling the public.
You wrote "IF American companies are buying U.S. steel,... " In this case, there is no Tariff involved, so right off the bat, your example of money going into the treasury in the form of taxes does not have anything to do with the topic of "Tariffs - Who pays it?" The president makes it very clear, he says China pays the tariff. That's what he says ... China pays the tariff. I will make as clear a statement as I can. "China does not pay tariffs. The president says they do and I say that is a lie.
Look, I understand that there are other incomes to the treasury ... like taxes, and we could debate whether tariffs are good or bad ... or whether they work or don't work. The president has made a series of statements about tariffs that are at best either misleading or outright wrong. Because this thread meanders and goes far afield of tariffs ... that does not change the t***h. He doesn't have to explain economics to the public, he just has to stop lying to them. I call him a liar because I have ASSUMED he actually understands how tariffs work; IF he doesn't, he has experts that he can ask.

Seriously, Howard.....try and follow the thread, words, etc.

THE tariffs CAUSE the change of business activity which CREATES. More economic flow in the U.S. and MORE revenues into OUR treasury.

This is Econ & Biz 101.

China pays for the tariffs indirectly by it's loss of income from sales to the US. This loss of sales is cause for the Chinese think more carefully about dumping products on the American markets.
