This is a small red centipede that I found under a rotted piece of deadfall in woods. I've found several before but they were too fast for me however this time I had a container and a small paint brush in hand ready to swoosh it in.
Attached is my setup for this image. Lighting is constant with two IKEA single LED gooseneck desk lamps placed at 45 degree angles forward of the subject and a multiple LED lamp set overhead.
Diffusion is provided by the translucent plastic drink cup which when illuminated makes a light tunnel. I stuffed a white paper towel into the end of the cup to provide a white backdrop for the setup. I use a lab scissor jack to elevate the subject to lens height. I place a small ball of white modeling clay on the jack and pin the subject in place into the clay. The clay makes a very pliable mount and it can be mushed however needed to help position the subject and it can be used over and over.
The lens has a fixed aperture and I have set the ISO to max at 150 so all I need to do is control the shutter speed and watch the light meter until I get about 1/4 stop underexposed.
Looks good! Bits may be a bit dark but that effect adds to the mystery.
Good result. If, at some time, you cannot find a creature to shoot, the reproductive parts of flowers are quite stunning using a macro lens especially with your good stacking skills.
