The 200m is too confining for me shoot BB. I need more room. I was in the hallway as it was. The 85mm gets to go next game. By the way, We did win!!!

Nice work SENSORLOUPE. What lens are you shooting with? I am still fighting to get good shots,I don't know if I ever will!! If I don't get better soon my indoor days are numbered. Thanks

Tom

I shoot a lot of junior college basketball from courtside and i find a 70-200mm to be a good lens to shoot. It is a 2.8 as you need a fast lens to get the high shutter speed you need. I also usually set ISO to about 6400. Good exposures on your photos.
I attended a seminar on sports and he stated that typically a good sports photos show the ball and a face. One suggestions either hold the camera straight or straighten post processing so the player is not dribbling down hill. I usually straighten in Lightroom.

Sensorloop - better shots again. You are improving rapidly.

If you were shooting with the 200 prime, then, yes, likely way to long. I know you have the 85, which I find just a hair too short unless I can get roughly centered under the baseline, which is hard in most MS and HS venues as the walls are usually very close. Try the 85, but beware you have to wait for the action to come to you to fill the frame (as Jules would say) as shooting higher iso and cropping further is NOT a good combination. Personnally, I like my 50-150 2.8 for this application, but it took a while to find the copy of it I wanted.

I echo Alolweis comments on leveling. Suggest to try on the first two pictures posed, using the stands as your horizon, and compare with what you posted. Until Jules hammered this into me, I was not aware of how this subtitle change really made a nice difference.

Hi Tom
It was the Canon 200mm 2.8 Prime. I don't consider my shots good yet and yes BB will be over too soon before I have a chance to get better!! Going back to the 85mm 1.8 for the next game. Thanks for looking. BB takes lots of practice!

Thank you for commenting. The lens I used for this game is my canon 200 Prime 2.8. I just feel I can't get back far enough. Used ISO of 2000---25000---and 3200 was the highest. At 6400 ISO, what shutter speed are you using? Not always in the right spot to get faces and broom all!! I know I have to work on level too, as I don't have Light- Room to straighten.

Thank you David. I do have better luck with the 85. I also have a Tokina 100mm 2.8. Haven't tried that one yet. What do you think? It is a 100mm Macro. Level needs work. I have another stab at it in a couple of days Have some zooms, but they are 3.5 etc. too slow!

Hi. I know you have said the Tonika is slow AF. I am not familiar with it, so don’t have an opinion. Give it a try for a quarter and compare. That way not may other conditions change (same light, teams, etc). Head to head for a quarter or a half can help you decide. Now that you are using BBF with AF-C, you may find not as much an impact as you think

Don’t dismiss the zoom, unless they are not true 3.5 and are 3.5-???. You may be able to sacrifice the 1 EV to ISO to go from up to f4, but you are likely not to want to go much higher, both for ISO reasons as well as getting too much DoF. Jules has much more experience here, and can comment. I have noticed that he does not always shoot fully wide open, but a half or full stop down.

Hi Sensor:
In using the 85 try shooting from one of the corners if you can't get under the basket. Full on for faces and the ball. Have patience and control, let the action come to you. I used the 85 for a tournament last week and was pleased. Iso was 6400 in order to shoot at 1/800 at 1.8 2.2 & 2. The 85 doesn't focus that fast, depending on the camera your using. As you know I use the D500 for the extra reach (it's a crop camera) so it helps with the 85mm. Level all shots in post. Try different exposures maybe try 1/1000 then go to 1/800 and then 1/640 to stop the action and lower the iso. Be patient and have fun. Really try the corners you should be able to get closer and get those faces and the ball.
Good luck and post the shots.
Jules

Hi Jules, Maybe try the Tokina 100 2.8 tonite. I usually shoot from a corner at the end. I shoot with a Canon 7D mark 11 crop sensor. I try to get ball and faces, but It doesn't always happen. HA!! Thank you for all your tips I just have to find my best spot and the lens that works best for me at this sport. Patient, I am. I just love shooting

Sounds good sensor, shooting is fun. Post some pics after tonight's game. Shoot tight and fill the frame.
You have very nice equipment.
