In Mesilla, NM yesterday during a cold, rainy, snowy, sleeting day and decided to walk around regardless of the weather. Mesilla, adjacent to Las Cruces, was founded in 1848 under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Mesilla served as the capital of the Confederate Territory of Arizona in 1861-1862 and was known as the "hub", or main city for the entire region. Recaptured by the Volunteers of the California Column, it then became the headquarters of the Military District of Arizona until 1864. It was a major stop along the Butterfield Stage Line and a haunt of Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett & Pancho Villa. The La Posta Restaurant (great food) along with the Mesilla Plaza is on the National Historic Register. The La Mesilla Historic District, which includes Mesilla Plaza, was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961.

Excellent series, well composed and captured!!

We've been there a few times over the years and have eaten at the La Posta...somewhat unusual interior with cell where Billy the Kid was jailed for a brief period.
Thanks for sharing!!

Nice work on these--I’m a fan of door and window shots. Number four is excellent.

Thanks Jaymatt, appreciate the comment. Yep, really like that one also. Tried to close the doors for another shot but was blocked open.

My parents took me to Mesilla when I was 16 and just going to college in Las Cruces. We had lunch at La Posta restaurant. The thing that impressed me the most about that restaurant was the women's bathroom - it was done up in red "velvet" walls. The second was the sopapillas with a dusting of powdered sugar or plain with honey. Thanks for the memory.

Nice pics. Old Mesilla was a favorite hangout while at NMSU back in the 60’s and 70’s. Was VERY different then. More Wild West. Live in SW Florida now. Drove through Las Cruces this past September. Got lost. 45 years sure made a difference.
