Sony A6000 with an 18-105, another A6000 with an 18-135. My Nikon resides in the back of the closet.....somewhere. It's feeling neglected because it gets very little use anymore.

I keep at least one camera (preset for most parameters) on a nearby shelf set to allow me to grab it and go quickly in case of an unexpected photo opportunity. Have mixed feelings about a zoom vs. just a 50mm (FF) or 35mm (Crop). What do you favor?

I keep the 16-35/2.8 on my full frame Sony and the 24-70/2.8 on my crop Nikon. I used to keep the 16-80 on my Nikon; but now I’m thinking about selling that lens.

Then I carry a prime and one other lens with each camera plus flash and accessories

Which of those two lenses do you like better?

I am VERY new to digital photography and have a Canon T4i. Trying to learn and understand it's capabilities, slowly. I hesitate to ask questions because my depth of photo knowledge is very low. This thread is asking for a suggestion on a go to lens and several have been suggested. My question is why were these lens chosen? The leading manufacturers have many lenses which do different things, but I don't know what these things are. Be gentle, I'm just learning, very slowly.

From the responses, it appears that a zoom lens is chosen most often due to its versatility. One way to determine the best lens is to look at the exif of all your photos and see which length is used most often by YOU. I got that advice here.

Yeah, what's wrong with you?

The question asked was "Which lens do you keep on your "grab n' go camera" - nothing more, nothing less, Mr troll.

I leave an 18-105 on my A6000 and a 24-105 on my A7rii unless I have a definite reason to put something else on.

I keep 2 cameras ready: One 6DMkII with a 24-105L Full Frame along with a 14mm Samyang Auto Focus Wide Angle to swap out if needed ,the I also carry

the T3 Rebel Aps C equipped with the 55- 250mm IS backup for slightly further distance captures if required. I may add a tele-converter (1.4x) at some future date to extend my capabilities.

Don

And the same on my D7000. I may change it up with my 35mm 1.8 just for the challenge.

On my Sony A6500 I keep the Sony 18-105mm f4 or my Sigma 16mm f1.4.

On my A7RIII I keep my Sony 24mm f1.4 G-Master.

On my A7III I keep my Sony 24-105mm f4. Cheers

Trough trial and error I've managed to assemble a very complete DX kit of (in my opinion) great quality. Everything from 8mm fisheye to 300mm.
10-20 Sigma, 17-50 2.8 ,50- 135 2.8 55-300. 2 bodies and a giant carry all camera bag. There is a tool for every job. I have found the 17-50 most universal all-round lens for Dx.
However zooms make me lazy and less focused, less creative. I take my best, most creative photos when limited to a single prime. Usually a 28mm on Dx .
