My brother sent a link to a free online background removal app.

https://www.remove.bg/

I loaded the left-hand image into the app and it returned the right-hand image five seconds later.

I didn't touch the stripped down image, but a little processing probably could have fixed any flaws.

Not perfect, but not all that bad.

Certainly quick but need to be a little more choosy about original image. 2nd one about 99%. Thank you!

You can do silly things with it--judicially choosing your image.

It saves the stripped file as a .png, so you can usually overlay it on another image.

It might be helpful to note that the service requires a person to be in the image. It would not process the photo below (which I have been trying to do with varying success over the years) despite there actually being a person in the photo...

Probably that's why it screws up when there is too much extraneous content close to the human subject(s).

Just be aware the domain extension .bg means it is in Bulgaria, known for hacking, viruses, etc. Not saying this site is not legit, just forewarning.

Good point.

I'll look carefully at their site to see whether they've got some way of monetizing their technology.

Their address is given as:

BYTEQ e.U.
Loewelstrasse 12/36-37
Vienna 1010
Austria

This is from their About Us page.

About remove.bg
Remove.bg is a free service to remove the background of any photo. It works 100% automatically: You don't have to manually select the background/foreground layers to separate them - just select your image and instantly download the result image with the background removed!

FAQ
How does it work?
We use sophisticated AI technology to detect foreground layers and separate them from the background. To improve the results we have several additional algorithms in place, for instance to improve fine details and prevent color contamination.

If you are interested in the details, sign up for our mailing list! We will write more about this in the future.

Why does it only work for persons/faces?
Our AI is trained to detect persons as foreground and everything else as background. That's why it only works if there is at least one person in the image. In the future we want to support other kinds of images as well, such as product images. If you have a special request or want to tell us about your use case, we would love to hear about it!

What is the maximum image resolution?
You can upload images of any resolution. However, for performance reasons the output image is limited to 500 × 500 pixels. We are currently looking into ways to increase this limit though. If you want to be notified when higher-resolution images are supported, sign up to our mailing list!

Is there an API?
We will release an easy-to-use API to remove.bg soon. If you want to use remove.bg in your app, website or other digital product, you can either sign up for the beta here or, if you are feeling less adventurous, you can join our our mailing list to be notified when the stable API is available for production use.

Problems? Feedback?
If you experience any problems with the service or have bad results, you can reach us via email. Of course, any other feedback is welcome as well!

A Note on Privacy
Your images are uploaded through a secure SSL/TLS-encrypted connection. We process them, and temporarily store the results so you can download them. After that (about an hour later) we delete your files. We do not share your images or use them for any other purpose than removing the background and letting you download the result.

As the company states specific plans on expanding the features and capabilities, I suspect the app will be free to use for only a period - until the kinks are worked out with the help of user feedback. Many software companies take this approach in the beginning, before going commercial.

Operative word is "FREE". Can we expect perfection?
The hacker does appreciate you allowing access to your processor - it's now part of a bot that's busy hacking Mastercard.......
