Useless Blurry Photographs Turned Into Artwork

We all have ways of overcoming life's issues. I for one will be the first to admit, several of my images are not good enough to be shown here. However, in the same breath, many of those images can be saved simply because I've had a chance to rethink how best these blurry images can be viewed.

I've developed a nervous condition as well as rheumatoid arthritis in my back, shoulders, hands & arms. So caring a tripod is nearly out of the question. But for those pictures I've already taken, I was about to throw these away until I though about returning to my root as an art teacher.

The idea was to take a couple of these blurry hand held photographs, transfer them to canvas then paint over the images with oil paints. For the last 2 years, I've been systematically selecting a couple of photographs, transferring these onto canvas then with a limited color pallet, I painted in the colors. Sort of like an adult paint by numbers kind of thing without any numbers. I was relying on a second photograph for the colors.

One image, was something I did not long ago. I placed a small vase on the back porch step with some fall flowers. As the sun rounded the house and shine down into the steps, I took the picture. Then login to the walmart photo site and had this photo transferred to canvas. 1 week later the canvas print was ready.

I set the canvas print on my easel and starting painting with a limited color pallet. One month later, I finished my "Flowers of Fall" impressionistic oil painting based on a blurry photograph.

Edit:

There's one good thing about all this, even though i shake with nerves.. this adds something to stokes of the paint brush. So it doesn't need to be perfect. Use the ability god has given you to the best of your ability. I hope to explore more images in the future with the new camera. Seems I'm better as a painter than a photographer, But both go hand in hand.

Good for you! Reminds me of what the nuns use to tell me, “Where there is a will, there is a way.”

As a fellow painter/photographer (although I have not yet combined the two as you have) - I think it is brilliant what you have done! It's a great painting and I truly admire how you have creatively overcome all of your difficulties to create art - a real achievement and very inspiring!

I LOVE this!. Thank you for sharing. My mother is 86, recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's, failing vision and problems using her hands since a minor stroke. She has expressed an interest in getting back to painting. This may work..... Thank you again!

It’s an interesting idea and looks very successful judging by your post. I have been contemplating doing something similar but only using Photoshop, not real oil paints. At the moment I’m just trying a combination of photo and paint, rather than painting over the photo. It’s always worth trying something new.

The creative mind can over come many obstacles, and art can be satisfying even if not the best, just for self expression and satisfaction.

Thanks everyone. if it wasn't for my wife being my strength I may never have picked up a camera or even thought about painting ever again.

CaptainEd take some photos she might be interested in painting then print them on canvas as I did. The only issue I had doing this, is sometimes it was hard to figure out what I painted and what was photographed.

More painted works can be found on my wordpress site.. Enjoy. thanks for looking.

Very beautiful. You have the talent God gave you and I admire that talent that shines in spite of your arthritis.
Congratulations.

maggiemae I bet you can paint. So maybe it's the kind of paint you're working with, oils are very hard to master and blend. Same holds true with water colors, as these tend to be put on too heavy and wash out any other colors. So instead of trying to master oils on a already colored canvas. Why not take a few black and white photo and simply fill in areas with color. we all have to start small. Don't jump into this unless you know how to approach the build up of colors on the canvas.

What a fantastic idea, bokehen! Your painting is fabulous. I checked out your Wordpress site, too. Love the Mabry Mill painting...all are very nice! Wish I could paint! But I'm very good at taking blurry photos so I guess that's a start!
