Its not too often than I'm able to get this kind of tonal range
suggestions for improvement, in terms of both post processing but also cropping before I print?
(BTW, this was shot on Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas)

So is the dark part in the middle water? Frankly, for some reason I'm having trouble knowing what I'm looking at. Is the foreground porous rocks? It's a beautiful sky. You have lots of contrast.

Whilst you have the extremes of tonal range, have you lost some mid tones - I feel that centre section should be showing us more detail?

That's a good point, I'll try to bring these mid-tones back with some editing

Sorry Rick, but not too much tonal range there for me. It's rather contrasty and has consequently lost a heck of a lot of detail. If you could temper that back you would actually have an image of great potential. May I ask what treatment to have applied to this image, and why?

I think the subject is your sky, but I feel like the land is competing with it. Too busy for me, but I think if you took down the contrast on the land it would be better.

It helps to use our terms correctly.
Something with a greater dynamic range is brighter at its b4ight end and darker at its dark end than is something of a lesser dynamic range.

Something of a given range with a greater spectrum has a greater number of steps of grey between the bright end and the dark end than does something with a lesser spectrum but equal range.

The image you posted has a great tonal range, but is of a very limited tonal spectrum.

Wow! Thanks for the input, Dave. I hadn't thought of it in this way before.

Hi, Rick,
You certainly have a wide tonal range, but the chosen contrast seems to have reduced the tonal spectrum...at both end regions and in the middle there are some intermediate greys missing.

Dave

Edit:
Good Heavens...I hadn’t realized that this was an older post to which I had already responded...well, at least I didn't contradict myself.

Best regards,
Dave
