Due to my refusal to pay the monthly tax that Adobe wants to charge my system which currently has the stand alone Lightroom 6 installed will have Elements 19 when it gets here. I’ve read all the wonderful positive remarks about the monthly tax but I just can not justify continually paying Adobe. Personally I think it is a money grabber game that Adobe has gone to. Anyway just ranting about what I consider an unnecessary tax.

Not a tax, but a monthly usage fee, like your phone and cable.
(I wouldn't "rent" it either.)

Buy something else! Adobe doesn't need your money. They are getting plenty from the 10 million subscribers that like what they get. But, I have rants too!!

My first rant: Film used to cost money when that's all we had. Film and developing still costs money. Adobe's $10 per month, if spent on film and developing instead, would get you between 36 and 72 exposures per month. Using film should cost about 10 cents an image, with a further discount when bursting or bracketing.

My second rant: A decent 6 pack of beer costs $10. It should be no more than a dollar a bottle.

My final rant: Adobe is looking and moving forward. They are developing system of interconnected parts with Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom CC, Lightroom Web, Lightroom on phones and tablets and Portfolio. In other words, it is not Lightroom for $10 a month, it is a complete system of photographic tools, useful now and growing more useful moving forward.

It is a subscription! I still use Ps CS6 (DVD-ROM Sourced; one of the last they sold before the Cloud / Subscription thing). It is not unusual today. Virtually everyone claims they are just "renting" you the software. I subscribe to Microsoft for Office because that is the cheapest way to get MS-Access. That otherwise only comes for sale with the most expensive commercial business version(s) of Office. I'll eventually bend to Ps CC either when my desire for better Content Aware Tools gets to me or I buy a newer camera. I process in 16-bit and even sometimes 32-bit, so PSE (8-bit TIFF or PSD, etc.) does not cut it for me.

Ignoring the inflammatory language, you don't need anything more than standalone LR and PSE if you shoot JPEG or shoot RAW from cameras released in 2017 or earlier. Assure you have the install files, including the final point-updates for each software, and the license keys and have registered the software on the Adobe site with user name and password. With the files and keys saved to secure back-up media, if you change computers, you can easily migrate the software onto the new equipment.

For people for whom Elements is sufficient, you are probably correct. The main advantage of full Photoshop over Elements for me is support for 16 bit images where Elements only supports 8 bit, so it won't take advantage of the full capabilities of my cameras. I started with the first version of Photoshop, and upgraded to each new version. If they had the subscription model from the beginning, I would have saved hundreds of dollars. And with the subscription it is continually being upgraded so you don't have to wait until the next major upgrade any more. You can keep older programs which are sufficient for you, but eventually upgrades in computers and operating systems will quit supporting your older software.

And at some point you will want the newest upgrades so that means buying the latest version of PSE- probably annually, unless you choose to do without. I am a long time user of PS and every year or two I upgraded to the tune of about 200.00-until the monthly fee system started. The 9.99 monthly user fee is a bargain to me! And much more than just LR comes with that monthly cost.

So with the subscription based you have to be on line for it to work and living in the country or traveling with my camper maxing out my hotspot via my phone is out of the question. The quality of photography that I shoot with my D810 look great. And my custom built PC from Puget Systems will keep me satisfied for many years to come. I don’t shoot film anymore and my 4X5 color enlarger has not been used in years the manufacturer of my 2 1/4” camera went out of business. But its all good because C-41 has a lot of fumes that I do not have to breath any more and the quality of photography is top notch. I remember arguing with my Dad that I will always shoot film that was back in the D70 days.

You must be online to set up the subscription program or to share your photos.
You Do NOT have to be online to load your photos or edit them or save them.
