This female squirrel has produced quite a few young squirrels, on our property. She is eating Sunflower seeds from my hand. Very tame. When I am finished filling my bird feeder from a plastic bucket, that I store the bird feed in, most of the time, she has gotten in the bucket & is eating the bird feed in it.
When she is close to me in the yard, I make a noise with my mouth & she comes right next to me expecting a "hand out" of Sunflower seeds, etc. To me, this is "pretty neat" to be able to communicate with her (a wild animal). As you can see, she gets right in my hand, & she has never been "skittish" at all.

Grizzly Bears are not the only things to bite people. Continue this and get ready for your Rabies shots. A very dangerous practice. Not good for the animals either. Fear of humans is an important part of their survival set.

I'd feel a little safer wearing gloves.

Awwww!! That is super! My cousin befriended a chipmunk, she called him "chippy". Everything was great, she would go home for lunch and he would greet her on the deck and she would feed him. Well one day he was not there when she got out of her car so she went inside, ate and went back out kneeling down as she called for him. No sooner she saw him and his entire family coming up all around her and she said she just about messed her pants!! She said they were not afraid of her but she was overwhelmed by all of them. She use to post pictures all over her FB page with her adopted chipmunks lol!

He speaks the truth. Might want to heed it.

FYI- squirrels do NOT carry rabies. And will bite only if frightened or threatened.

As long as the squirrel lives and stays in the yard it is pretty safe. I see no harm in befriending it. Growing up in South Carolina I have hunted squirrels. I would not hunt them today, however.

Rabies are an extreme rarity in squirrels...… if you were to receive a bite, and felt you needed to go to the emergency room, they will not give you rabies shots (my brother was bitten fairly deep by one he found injured on the side of the road, and went to emergency to have it checked and inquired about rabies. They told him shots not necessary as none have been found with rabies and the occurrence is "extremely" rare on this continent. I feed a yard full of them and have never had a real bite, have been "teethed" a few times, but skin broken only once, because I pulled away to fast. I have also had them scratch up my bare legs and draw blood when jumping from a table onto me, they don't mean to scratch, but their claws are basically razor sharp. Feeding them barefoot will get you "teethed", as toes must look a bit like peanuts to a squirrel!!! If you don't like my word on it, check with the CDC, and other legitimate sources.

PS - they are great fun and very entertaining, we have daily peanut wars where we try to fling peanuts to the Blue Jays before the squirrels can get them. Blue Jays are very fast and so are squirrels, so it is an active game!

I found an abandoned juvenile flying squirrel on my stoop one afternoon. There were no obvious injuries or reason for abandonment. I took him/her (never knew which) in to shelter and feed till it was bigger and stronger to release. Kept Rocky in a quickly constructed cage while away at work. Rocky was a fun guest to have around. He/she liked to snuggle in my shirt pocket and glide from my shoulder to the sofa or chair. A couple of times, while in his cage Rocky seemed to go into a seizure. Upon returning home one day, rocky had passed away in his cage. A sad ending for such a fascinating little creature.
