My wife and I really enjoy hiking in North and South Carolinas
I also enjoy taking some nice pictures along the way. The easiest is to use my phone camera, but obviously very limited on what I can shoot.
The thought of my Canon hanging around my neck while clambering over some of the trails does seem like a good idea.
Does anyone have a system for keeping the camera handy, but also secured hands-free?y wife is a speed demon when hiking, so unpacking the camera from the backpack and shooting would leave me in the dust!

I’ve used a Cotton Carrier harness for a few years and love it. It distributes the weight well, keeps your hands free for hicking, and makes the camera very easily & quickly accessible.

Many binocular harnesses are available at the big box stores that are inexpensive and work well when participating in active endeavors.

If your wife is a speed demon walking try what I do. If I am walking with someone who is tiring me out I will tell them I need to take a pic and really just rest for a bit. Works every time.

I use the two camera system called Spider Holster and it's very secure.

Dual Camera Camera Carrying Vest
I purchased this rig about a month ago. It works very well. You can completely ditch the neck strap. It comes with two safety straps with two split rings to install on the camera strap pins. You do not have use or install the side carry for a second camera. The clip installs on the tripod female screw. It must be installed as shown. You insert into the vest clip with the camera horizontal and when hanging down the camera cannot jump out.

Thanks for this discussion. I've been looking for an answer to this same question. I think the Cotton Carrier might be a better choice for me. In case of a fall, the Spider Harness looks like it might put the cameras directly in line with the likely landing spot.

I agree, but am picturing the vest with shoulder straps, and a day pack with straps. Seems like it would be uncomfortable.

The Cotton Carrier straps are not very comfortable. They are padded. If you buy it from B&H and don't like it, you can return it without a penalty.
