I notice there are typically complaints regarding the fit and longevity of the pre-cut covers that are available and I am looking for a viable alternative.

Hi Dave, I bought some fitted covers from Wish...haven't arrived yet but they look OK...

Camo tape on the lens? Just use the lens cap.
