These are from last nite. The gym was well lit and my ISO could have been lower. There wasn't much jump action, but we did win 50 to 24. Focus is still a prob #2 is our grand daughter. She made 21 of the 50 points. Soph. on the Varsity

Hi:
What is the equipment you are using again. Settings? Then maybe I can shed some light on the shots. Color is good.

Great improvement. You are getting this quickly.

First 3 are very nice. I know you don’t like the bit of lack of focus on your granddaughter (#2) in the first shot, but other than that, it is a very good shot. Ball and main player with it in nice tight focus. Best of the bunch. Cropping significantly better

Play with your focus group. I know Jules said he shoots with D9 with his D500, but with my D7200, I believe I had better luck with single.

Try leveling the baseline. I know it sounds picky, but several UHH members recommended it to last year. While I was doubtful at first, I can now see the benefit of “leveling the horizon. Just the bleachers in the background for your horizon. give it a try

Were you able to try BBF with continuous focus? I know you were going to look if your Canon would do that.

Thanks David. Yes it has BBF. Right now I can focus on BB and the front button. I did not set that up. So I can hold the back B down and press the front. Maybe that was already set up when I got it!! Can focus with either. yes on the leveling!! Something else to work on. I did try the single point also on some

Hi again:
The camera is handling the 2000 iso really well. I would in my opinion raise the iso, raise ss to 1/1000.
I really believe you have to shoot in manual. Forget tv. manual iso, manual ss and shoot wide open with that lens. I have the 85mm 1.8, is that yours too? Work on what focus works best for you. I would go to a/c at single, then try d9 or group. I am not familiar with Canon cameras, but give these suggestions at least a try. Maybe during warm up, etc. Your on the right track sensorloupe.
My best and shoot tight always. This shot I used Nikon D500 85mm 1.8 iso 1250 Hope this helps. 1/800
Happy Holidays,
Jules

My 7D MKII does better for me with BB focus, single focus point, one shot / AI servo, high speed continuous shooting and no focus with the shutter actuation button!

This allows a single push of the back button to focus on still subjects while continually pressing the back button locks focus on a moving target with no focus delay when the shutter is activated. It also givers the option of high speed bursts to capture changing expressions during the play. I've taken up to 20 consecutive shots on single drive or rebound an gotten some interesting pix to choose from.

I agree that you should be totally manual because usually the light is consistent.

Presently you're asking it to refocus when you activate the shutter and if the subject moves during that time it's affecting sharpness.

Clickiety makes a really good point. BBF wont work well unless you make sue that the “main button” is set to shutter release only (i.e. take the focus off the half press). Otherwise, the delay may cause the moment to be missed. Also recommend setting shutter button to be shutter release priority, not focus priority. If you have BBF set to continuous when pressed, you don’t need it.

It may be this way, but if you camera focuses with the half press, you should try it the other way.

Yes. I have the 85mm 1.8 only Canon. That shot is perfect. What is d9? It's a Nikon term,I'm sure. Thanks for helping. Appreciate it. Will get it right someday

These refer to focus group elements used by the camera. Single is exactly that - spot focus using the focus element (normally center, but can be moved). D9 refers (at least in Nikon speak - don’t know Canon) to the 9 center elements for a small group average. From there, it gets bigger (D15, D21, etc depending on the body).
