Win10 file associations

Just recently updated an old Win7 computer to Win10. Everything seems OK except file associations.

I had Photoshop 2018 installed and recently updated to PS2019.
.PSD files still pointed to PS2018. I want them to point to PS2019.
Tried the settings to change the file association from PS2018 to PS2019. It lists programs that you can use, but PS2019 was not listed. You can look for an app in the store but that didn't help. I uninstalled PS2018 because I wasn't using it any more but PS2019 was still not listed. I uninstalled PS2019 and reinstalled it. Now PS2019 is listed in the file association panel but choosing it does nothing. The .psd files are now directed to "%1". Same issue with "open with" trying to set a default for .psd. "open with" will direct the .psd file I'm trying to open to PS2019 but will not set PS2019 as the default app for that extension even if I check "Always use this app..." .

Googled for solutions and one user suggested uninstalling update KB4462919. Unfortunately I installed Win10 after that update so it is not something I can uninstall.

Anyone have other suggestions? I have not tried to transmogrify the registry.

I’m assuming you have chosen “choose default aps by file type” under settings and then restarted The machine. Just curious if you right-click on the file and choose “open with” if PS 2019 is a choice? If that fails, I have no other ideas except to hack the registry. That wouldn’t worry me as I believe Regedit makes a backup copy of the registry when you edit it, but it may be a challenge to determine where to find the file associations.

PS2019 is a choice, and I can select it and open the file I used "open with" in PS2019 but it doesn't stick. PS2019 is not set as the default. even if I check "Always use this app...".

Time to run regedit... (not a clue where to look, but I’ll research it). You might find this link useful: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/630ed1d9-73f1-4cc0-bc84-04f29cffc13b/what-registry-keys-are-responsible-for-file-extension-association?forum=netfxbcl

I Googled: “how to change file associations in the registry”. Be sure to set a restore point before editing.

See if this works for you:
Highlight the psd file
Right Click, and choose "open with"
cursor down and "choose another app" (even if photoshop is listed)
Browse to the adobe directory where photoshop.exe is located, and check the box "always use this app to open psd files"

Tried that several times already. No joy.
Yes, it opens that .psd file with Photoshop.
No, it doesn't reset the default app.

Just another suggestion. Search for MS Support and use their Chat. I have used that a few times and found it helpful. The techie used a remote session and solved the issue.
Good luck.

Tried that too. They were unable to do anything and I ran out of time after about an hour. Will try again when I don't have meetings scheduled.

Since my last post here there have been a couple of Win10 updates. I have now been able to associate both jpg and jpeg with IrfanView, and also psd files with PS2019. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
