Hard drive ranting

I need to rant, just to feel better.
Working on a brand new Surface Pro 6 with a 1tb Samsung portable hard drive attached. All is well, moved some files around then started building a new document using InDesign.
No problem till it stopped being recognized by Windows. Just quit working.
I am out in the middle of Texas hill county for another week.
The only internet access (when it works) is my phone.
I suppose I will have to wait till I get back to Ft. Worth next week to try and fix this headache.
I just love computers 😝

Ken, Technology is great when it works the way it is supposed to. When you have a glitch, you tilt.

I can sympathize. No matter how careful you are, the computer will malfunction for no apparent reason. On the bright side, it might just start working again for no apparent reason.

Maybe email the file(s) to yourself as a backup until you resolve the problem with the external HD?

Could be that the drive is too full. I put it away for a cooling off period. Just reconnected and found that it is 90% full.
I could read the drive so I moved the folder I was working on to the computer hard drive.

All seems to be good again. I must be taking too many pictures to use 1 Tb of drive space.

I have been watching an English TV program lately called "The IT Crowd". When someone calls in about a computer problem, the Crowds opening greeting is, "Have you tried turning it off, then on again?". Have you done that?
This might apply to anyone having computer problems (Jerry?).

That was the first question when I was forced to use Apple (fruit) computers where I worked some time ago.

One neat little "free" program that would be helpful for you is "Tree Size Free," from https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/.

It's sort of like File Explorer, but it sorts the entire contents of the drive, putting the biggest directories on top. You can then easily see what is taking up the most storage. For example, I have found that on occasion c:\temp has a bazillion files in it taking up a good portion of the HD. Deleting those freed up a ton of disk space. Good luck.

This is the kind of situation where it pays to have the system automatically save periodically.
