From tonite's game. They didn't win, but they played a good game. I caught some of the action, but still not in focus. Choosing the correct focus cluster in a problem!! I did get the legs in this batch!! ha!!

These in my opinion are actually rather nice,
Looks as though the gym you were shooting in may have actually had some decent lighting.
For me though I think on some of these I would do some cropping to bring the veiwer in closer to the action.
Overall though I think these are pretty well done...

Thank you Tom. White balance is on auto. Yes I could crop. Used the 85m for these. Focus points bother me tho. Thank you so much
Hi
Agree - I like these better. Great interaction between the players
Not tight enough, but, as commented earlier, the 85 is probably quite long enough. To bad your Tamron 100 you feel is slow (I wouldn’t be able to comment), as that extra reach would help, and I prefer not to crop to fill the frame in PP as just throwing pixels away.
As for the focus group, for me personally I found that I had more luck with AFC-Single than any of the groupings. In tracking moving subjects (and in particular BB) with the focus point set 1 point below dead center and then going at their chests gave me best results. When I was even on a smaller focus group (e.g. D9), I found it was averaging well - and putting everything a bit out of focus. That said, I am still a learning amateur and that could just be me.
One other question - are you using continuous focus with BBF and taking focus of the shutter release? If not, try that, that even in the AF time on focus-on-half-shutter-press, the subjects are moving and can throw off focus

Thank you David. Did I say Tamron 100? It is a Tokina 100m. I just read that it is too slow for BB. Guess I should try it. Are you saying single point focus? No clusters? I am not using Back B focus. Altho there is a button on the back that will focus. But I did not set for BBF. I'm a Canon using 7D Mark 11. I'm use to shooting stills and Portraits, but I want to master (maybe) sports. A good sports lens is what I need, but that will never happen!! Ha!!

Did some cropping. 1-2-3 are in sequence and 5-6 are in sequence

RE: cropping - I like these tighter shots better, but note, low and behold, most became verital
RE: Focusing. Yes, I use only single point with AFC. While rairly are two players quite at the same focus, I should very shallow DoF so better to “paint” one with a single point on their chest and at least they are in focus. On BBF, I don’t know anything about Canons (sure another UHH can pipe in here), but suspect your Canon can do BBF. I find it easier to do this, with my thumb mashed for BBF on all the time, then to try to keep the shutter half pressed. I can also, say for a jump ball, set the focus in advance on one player and then recompose. With the AFC activated on via BBF, the lens is always seeking and tracking and, at least for me, this helped a lot in my sports shoots. Your mileage may vary....
Good luck and keep shooting.
