Girls High School Varsity BB. My 200m was a little too long. My Soph. Grand daughter is #2
Going back to the 85m for next game. I know they are not tack sharp!!
Why do you think the 200 is a bit long? You have plenty of cropping space the way they are. When I shoot basketball I use a 70-200 on a crop body with a 1.4 extender.

I guess because I don't like to crop. I'm shooting from the floor as the bleachers move as people get excited.
Thanks for looking tho.

Looks like you are under the basket shooting....the 85mm is probably perfect for that spot...

I was at the end. I just feel like I need more room. Game tomorrow nite. Canon 85 or Tokina 100 going. here are a few more, same game. Trying for sharper of course.

One thing to consider might be shooting vertical sometimes instead of horizontal, especially if she's in isolation. Feels like you are wasting a lot of space on either side (especially in a shot like #3 of the first batch) and instead could get a full body shot by going vertical (which gives you a better chance to get the ball if it's closer to her feet plus seeing the whole body is also great). When I shoot someone in particular playing sports I try to spend a little time vertical and focus on getting their whole body in the shot. Takes some practice but definitely worth it.
Hi
First - nice captures from a timing perspective.
I found shooting HS bball from the baseline challenging last season. Normally shot from the baseline/sideline corner as there was not room behind the baseline to the wall (without getting in the way of players and refs)
The 70-200 was too much if they were in my end of the court (and not enough reach at the other end!). The 16-85 was not quite long enough for any action that was basket or beyond. My solution was to get Sigma 50-150 f2.8 zoom, which covers this specific range, and it worked really well. I made sure I got the old V2 version, which while heavier, had faster AF. In your case, between those two primes, I would probably recommend the 100 if you are in the corner, but the 85 if you are on the baseline under the basket near the paint. Try one in each quarter.
In addition, I absolutely agree with kels about vertical. I allowed me to get in tigher, and often the ball was above players heads (and we want the ball in the picture - as Jules taught me!). This will match well with going to the 100 rather than the 85. If you have to lose something in composition - lose their feet
One last suggestion. Straighten your shots - floors don’t run downhill.
Good luck. Looking forward to the next set

The timing is good on the shots but I feel there is more action when you include legs in group shots. Someone said go vertical, and I agree. You could get more implied action.
Nice shots especially from bleachers. What were your settings ? ISO ? SS ? Aperture ?
here are some from Jan. w/ 85mm 1.8. Still shooting from the floor. ISO was high. I shoot a lot of vert., but with BB I want to fill the frame w/ players. My vert. in this case has too much neg. space. Practice!! Going with the Canon 85 1.8 tonite. 100m 2.8 is a Tokina which I have read to be too slow in focusing for sports
