I have photoshop cs5. Never took raw photos until I started reading the ugly hedgehog. Took a few raw pictures but when I opened them it said it could not complete the request because this file appears to be from a camera model not supported by the installed version of camera raw. I have a Nikon D7200 camera

JT, the issue you're up against is software that is older than your camera. You might be able to update the Adobe Camera Raw portion of Photoshop. However, don't get your hopes up too much. There is a RAW to DNG (Adobe Digital Negative) converter that is free to down load from the Adobe site. It works well, but keep your original RAW files as the DNG converter does discard some EXIF information.

If you are good with CS5 you will absolutely love Photoshop CC 2019. And there won't be any issues opening D7200 raw files or just about any currently available camera's files.

The CD that came with the camera can read your raw files and also do some limited processing. you can convert it to another file that PS can read.

or find a newer free Raw converter....you can generally check if it accepts your camera Before downloading.

Thanks, I did download the adobe DNG file and it seems to work pretty good. I guess I need to upgrade to a newer photoshop version.

That's why I am convinced that UHH is funded by consortium made up of all the major camera, lens, computer and software publishers.

Before I upgraded LR, I had to convert to DNG on one canon camera as it was not supported by LR5.

One cheap way to view and process the raw file before you spend more money is to download FastStone Image Viewer. I have not hit a camera yet that it did not support. I found it when I was in the same situation as you.

After that, you will have to make a decision, since you probably will want to shoot raw forever. Affinity Photo is inexpensive, requires no subscription, and is very PS like.
Photo Shop Elements is great too, and not all that expensive. Eventually, you will hit the same issue if you don't update to latest version and you buy a camera that is newer than your version. It seems Adobe likes to keep you coming back!

I hate to think how old CS5 is. Gene, you are both right and wrong. He will have to learn all those great new functions. You and I have no trouble as old dogs learning new tricks but some people do. Second, if he is running CS5, just imagine what kind of computer and OS he may have. He may not be good popping for a new one. Likewise about the software. After having a free ride all these years, do you think he would be good laying out a sawbuck every month? And probably the worst thing about going to PS CC is that he gets LR thrown in and he should really use that since it will likely handle most of his processing plus have the benefit of keywords.

PS He will also have to learn how much nicer raw's are to process than jpg's. But then again, they take up more storage.

I love the fact that I pay 10 dollars a month and have Lightroom and photoshop and all the updates are free. To me that is the only way to go then I hopefully will never have to worry about not being able to open my Raw files. I had that same problem this last week when I went to try and open RAW files from my new canon 6D mark ii and found that windows 10 couldn't open it. To my knowledge there still isn't an update for that file yet from Microsoft. I can however open them in Lightroom and Photoshop so its all good. I always just used the windows program to delete out any unwanted photos. You can find the 10 dollar by googling Lightroom CC. Its well worth the investment.

The overall problem is that there is no standard raw file format as TIFF and JPEG and etc formats are. We should be complaining to get a standard for raw. Such a standard does not have to obliterate image data. Loss of EXIF data lies in the image file header not the image data section and is really just 'conveinence' information.
