true, but at least second bag is free & no charge to pick a seat ( one could say that the early boarding fee is sort of acseat selection fee ); friendly people; take SW allvthe time

I travel regularly on Southwest. Never had an issue with my camera gear but I carry on the bodies and lenses and relegate my tripod and other stuff to the check-in. I use a medium-sized camera bag that will fit under the seat and a larger carry-on for the overhead. 2 check-ins are free but I would suggest you opt for the $15 priority check-in to ensure you are on early enough to have space in the overhead.

A few years ago I would have agreed with the above. More recently it is far from the same. Every flight is crowded, service is poor to poorer. If you check bags it takes a very long tome to get to the baggage corrals.

baggage takes 20 min to come to carousels; with 165 - 175 passengers on a plsne, it takes a long time to unload a plane, and then, drive it in from what might be a distant gate; remember that st some airports, you have to take a tram in o the msin terminal, and, the baggage train goes much slower

We fly Southwest Airlines whenever they are an option. We fly often and have never had a bad experience. We are careful to check in at the 24 hour prior time to get into the A boarding line if possible as we like aisle seats. If you are assigned any boarding number up to about B-45 or so, there is almost always ample overhead space. We carry one rollaboard bag each and have always been able to put it in the overhead. If I am carrying my camera gear, we will check one rollaboard bag and stow my camera bag in the overhead. Along with Shutterfly and Amazon, we find them one of the very best commercial organizations to work with. Besides, we really enjoy their sense of humor. As has been said here, if finding space is really important, pay the $15 and move up to the early A boarding. Note, however, that we have found that so many people are doing just that, that paying $15 may only get you into the late A group.

As long as you are quick to do the online pre-check, you should be okay. If you opt for the cheapest ticket price, do not expect to be able to alter the flight date or time without an exorbitant charge. 3-4 weeks in advance of departure I asked to change my departure date by one day. Same flight, same departure time - one day earlier. If memory serves correctly, charge to change would have been about 2/3 of the original ticket price. I pleaded my case to no avail, citing time before departure date and the fact the earlier flight had more open seats than the flight I originally booked on. They have some nickel & dime extras that can add up. If you do not spend the extra ( I did) - you will will be denied access to overhead bin storage, which limits your carry on to a size that must fit under the seat on front of you and your seat will be chosen for you by the personnel at the gate which would have been okay for any short flight, but not for a trip requiring carry-on luggage. Yes there is always the ability to use checked baggage. Just depends on your particular circumstances and how it fits into your planned trip. Southwest is not very different from add-on fees than other airlines.

Domestically, Southwest is my favorite airline. Efficient and friendly. Checked bag is free. Good advice on paying the extra $15 to board in the early group. Never had a problem with carry-ons.

I have never traveled on Southwest Airlines. I am going to the southwest in early spring and am considering travelling on Southwest Air. Of course, their "Wanna Get Away" fare is the cheapest route BUT since I have never traveled with them I have no idea about overhead space for my camera gear. I am certainly not going to check my gear. Has anyone traveled on Southwest on "Wanna Get Away" fare and had any good or bad incidents. If I need to go up to their next fare level, i might as well go United or American. Thanks for anyone's insight.

We generally fly Southwest & find the service excellent! They do not sell tickets by the seat, so you should arrive early or at least check in early to get an A tier seating. Those people get their pick of seats on board!!! The overhead compartment handles a smaller suitcase (14 X 22 x 8"). You could
put your camera in a backpack carry on & stow it under the seat in front of you. Sometimes the overhead compartments get pretty jammed full!

I travel Southwest all the time. The price is great. Plenty of storage for a 21 inch carry-on type bag in the overhead compartment plus under the seat. Enjoy the ride.

Southwest is my go-to airlines to nearly everywhere they fly. Only had a problem once, and that was with lost luggage. Pay the extra $15 for the better in-line placement and do check in online. That assures you of better seats. Paying the extra $15 gets you into the A group. I find their overhead very available. Since they don't charge for checked baggage, people aren't trying to carry everything they own on board with them!
