Thanks for the heads up...sounds like a good reason to buy elsewhere.

No, it's not, it's a very bad reason because what the Best Buy naysayer failed to mention is, B&H also has a similar return policy.

I just called B&H.....I was told that they do not charge a restocking fee...they do not pay for return postage however.

I also called the Best Buy store I visited....they confirmed they charge a 15% restocking fee on any opened box for a camera or lens, even if it was 5 minutes ago.

I haven’t bought camera gear from them (prefer my local store Durys for that). But boy did I get a deal “one day only- in store only” on a Dell Inspiron 2in1 16mb, 256 ssd hard drive latest Intel i7 processor for only $755! I’ve had great experiences with other electronics from Best Buy - no problems

Then what the person at B&H told you isn't the same as what is on their web site. Their return policy is conditional and if you don't meet their conditions, they may and probably will charge a 15% restocking fee. The policy is quite clear and what's on their website takes precedence over the spoken word of a single employee.

I just went onto the B&H website and then called B&H and spoke to someone else.

Their website has conditions for returns..new condition, in original unaltered box(including an intact UPC code), all packing materials, blank warranty cards, manuals, and accessories.

The new person confirmed.....they do not charge a restocking fee as long as you return everything in its new condition...you can try out the camera or lens...usually for 30 days...right now until January 31.

I discovered that Best Buy...specifically the one near the Mall of Georgia, NE of Atlanta..has a very large selection of cameras on display to handle.

I had been looking at adding a smaller camera for travel....reading reviews...watching YouTube videos. I pretty much ruled out all the cameras I handled.

I also handled most of the DSLR’s I could have an interest in....and decided I didn’t want to hike 5 miles with a full frame camera.

With camera stores being almost as hard to find as phone booths, I thought someone might find this information helpful. I would think that some Best Buy stores in other areas would have similar displays. And yes, I would consider buying from Best Buy, when and if I decide on a new camera.

For the bigger Best buy stores, your experience rings true. However, cross check every answer you get from an employee or ask it via google on your smart Phone. If they have any knowledge, it is slim or biased toward SONY. They have a great return policy and a price match policy. But I think you MUST be a self informed buyer to have a satisfactory experience at Best Buy--across their entire store.

He didn't say he's averse to walking five miles.
He simply said he'd choose to do it with lighter
gear in his bag. He's not proud ... he's smart.
YMMV, and apparent does.

How many Best Buy stores did you shop at to form that opinion?

Be careful with Best Buy’s return policy....I wanted to try a Sony lens, an expensive little fella, I was told that the minute I open the box, if I did not like the lens, I would be charged a 15% restocking fee. I went and bought the lens at B&H for the same $$. And am very happy with the lens. Best Buy lost out and I use to love that store. No more...

A lot of retailers adopt this practice with expensive camera equipment to prevent "free rental" abuse.

My son lives in NYC. When I visit him I take a three hour block and go to B&H. I handle everything in sight (except the female clerks, especially since ME TOO). I remember once I was looking for a good ball head for my Benro tripod, I must have handled at least 40 of them before deciding on the one I wanted. But I never buy in the store because I have to travel by subway back to my son's apartment. So, when I get home I order it, that way, I get to have fun twice, once in handling it in the store and then I get to anticipate it's arrival.

Wow good self control! One reason I go to B&H (I live in NYC too) to buy something is to walk out with it. I am often impressed by their efficient fulfillment in the store with the conveyor belts and staff. B&H is not a store it's a machine!

I also wanted to mention that I do that sometimes with products that are usually more expensive in a retail store - to try it out first before buying it online for less $$$.

Did you return the lens to B&H? If not then what's your point. Would you be less happy with the lens if you bought it at Best Buy?!
There is a reason why the company is forced to have a restocking fee policy, which by the way doesn't apply in all 50 US states. There are a lot of less than honest people out there and one of the scams stores like Best Buy were subject to was, they were being used as a free rental service. Someone would "buy" a camera or lens, use it for whatever reason, then return it within the return window for a full refund. The restocking fee policy pretty much eliminates that practice. Plus, once a product has been used and returned, it can no longer be sold as new. You may believe you outsmarted Best Buy by purchasing the lens elsewhere but truth is, if you didn't buy it, someone else did.
Personally, Best Buy is one of my favorite places to shop for certain photo gear. I live in Pennsylvania, about 20 minutes from Delaware. I shop at the Best Buy in north Delaware all the time because Delaware has no sales tax.
By the way, do you know B&H has a very similar return policy as Best Buy; probably not...
