I too have a D3400 just about a year old. Except for the 18-55mm and 70-300mm kit lenses i had bought only a 35mm f/1.8 and used the 18-55 for most shooting. I just received a Nikon 18-140 and really like the added reach. For the most of my photos (of houses being rebuilt after Hurricane Harvey in the Dickinson, TX area), the 18-55 was OK. However, there were shots that needed a bit more reach but too close for the 70-300. I think the 18-140 will stay on my body most of the time.

When in Florida I walk down nature preserves, my favorite walk around lens here is the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 because of it's versatility , speed, quick focusing and image quality.
When on vacation or a cruise my favorite is a 24-720 mm Zeiss lens permanently attached to my Sony HX-90V point and shoot.
My favorite parade lens is the Nikon 70-200 E 2.8.
My favorite walking down the street lens is either the Nikon 24-120 on the D850 or the Nikon16-80 on the D500.

for me, it is the Canon 15-85, it has the width and the reach for all around shooting.

The 18-140 is a great lens. No doubt. I bought one for my brother and one for my girlfriend who both shoot Nikon. Personally I shoot Canon and have their 18-135. Good choice.

Nikon D610 would be the 28-300 while the Nikon D7100 is the 18-200. I have used these for multi-week trips to Europe, general walk around in the woods, beachscaping, and family gatherings (lots of candids); basically, these accomplish everything I am after even if they are a bit heavy their versatility more than offsets.

Seems mostly zooms for most.
Past was a 18-250mm Tamron on 7d2.
Recently was 24-105mm L on 6d2.
But right now 85mm on 6d2.....

"If" I go out to shoot outdoors I take the Canon 28-300L F3.5-5.6.
"If" I know that I will be shooting indoors I take the Canon 24-70L F2.8 II (Non IS)
"IF" I have to pick just one lens, I would pick the Canon 28-300L because it has IS which almost makes up for the low light capability difference between the Canon 24-70L F2.8 II, and the Canon 28-300L F3.5-5.6.
Yes, I said it out loud, but for me it is true. Yes, the Canon 28-300L F3.5-5.6 weighs a lot*. So get a quality OP/Tech (inexpensive) strap and enjoy being prepared for "most" photo opportunities during your walkabout with just one lens.

*Canon lens weights:
Canon 24-70L F2.8 II - 1.77 lb.
Canon 100-400 - 3.63 lb.
Canon 70-200L F2.8 III - 3.28 lb.
Canon 28-300L F3.5-5.6 -3.68 lb.

I will now "duck and cover", grin.

Every lens I own. I can't pick one.
Each has it's own use. I have zooms, a macro. I have a 1.8 for indoors. I have a walk around lens.
I will say that, they are all "pro" lenses. When I got my 1st L lens that was it for me.
I am OCD, I demand tack sharp images from myself.
To that end I use quality lenses, tripods, wireless remotes, any thing that's helps.
I do have a Canon 100-400mm L coming this Saturday.
When I get a new lens, I try to use it exclusivley for a month.
Kick the tires and see how handles in the cruves.
