Windows, Mac, or Linux?

For Windows, the unfortunately-seemingly unknown-on-UHH program to check out is called Paint.NET. Go to https://www.getpaint.net to see its story.

It is FREE, was developed under Microsoft mentoring as a graduate student project and has continued on. It is very capable, but does not have the intimidation factor of the high-end apps (Photoshop, GIMP). Very well maintained and supported. Please run from suggestions that you MUST use Photoshop to call yourself a photographer. Those are rampant here.

Many claim it is easier that Photo Shop and just as good for the average person. Here is a link to some tutorials. Look at some of them and decide if it is for you. It is a one time purchase of about $40. It also has a good user forum

if you use a Mac, then one of the simplest to learn is macphun. it has about 4 programs in the suite that will do a lot of PS stuff, but it's really more intuitive.

I have used acdsee for the last 12 years. It is sophisticated enough for my needs an infinitely better than any of the free programmes I tried early in my career.I have found the company quite responsive to user suggestions and unlike the Adobe products, you can actually talk to a human being for their technical advice and help. Lastly, you own the program and are not merely renting it.

If you are on a Mac Photos and Preview do all the basics and are already to go from the Applications folder.

I always thought Lightroom was fairly simple to learn, and there are a ton of free tutorials on YouTube for using Lightroom. If you are looking for a simple free software, I can't help you with that, as I have always used programs such as Lightroom, Photoshop, DxO, Affinity, ON1.
