A Long Time Ago...

Actually a decade ago, I have taken this. It was at the NC Transportation Museum.

The last time I rode a Pullman coach on a road line, it was back in 1974 from Niles on the Burlington running to the Loop in Chicago. The ride cost me only a dime. I liked riding this because I could step off the step onto the road at the curve before entry into the station area. This gave me a block to walk to the Chicago and Northwestern so I could get to Lombard out west.

Good "Iron" memories.

Sounds like a complicated commute despite the ticket price.

Actually, it was easier than it sounds.

The trip took place during the afternoon rush hour. I ended reading a paperback on each such trip. That was the more expensive part of the ride.

I think my CNW trip ran me about two dollars. I cannot exactly recall. My two alternatives were the CTA and my car. There was a girlfriend in Lombard.

I know that METRA costs a heck lot more today. And my girlfriend moved on.

Thanks for viewing and comment.

The "model" certainly was nice. A very well kept car, indeed. CNW retired their coaches from their commuter lines some time before I started using their trains up in Chicago. So it was a pleasant surprise for me to see the car.

My comments were prompted by knowledge of the area. I lived in Evanston after 1975 and rode the L to the Loop, but then lived 18 years in the western area of Downers/Naperville and rode the Burlington/Metra to the Loop. Many, many years. Thought the train was great. Read newspapers and listened to tapes on a Sony.

And any business calls were put on hold until you got to a phone.

My time in Chicago was from 1955 through 1969 and 1971 through 1975. Then, thanks to Nixon, I had to move south for the income.

I wished to have brought with me the ethnic diversity I enjoyed around Chicagoland. In the South, there are only two cultures. Fried and deep fried.

It is very hard to make people understand how anyone could get around a vast region without a drivers license. My mother never got a driver's license, and yet she got around the city.

I heard that movie production companies often leave acquired period pieces in better condition than they find them.

Thanks for the comment.

Meant to mention that Evanston, Ill, was the birthplace of the sundae, the ice cream treat. And yes, it is the respelling of the word "Sunday" for a good reason. :sm02"

I am aware of the various other claims. However, the Evanston creation was to evade an Official Blue Law.
