They are made in Sweden but readily available in the US and Canada. The company makes several lighting setups for pro photographers. The A1 is their first "small" flash light but it has wide capabilities.

Thank you. I will try to locate it at my local store.

I'm in the market for a good, durable speed light for my D500. I've read some reviews on Nikon's SP5000 and they haven't been very good. I shoot primarily landscape and wildlife; however, I do occasionally shoot special events for friends and family and could use a good speed light. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Since a decent one will be an "investment" I would urge to get one with:

1. Lithium high capacity battery
2. Capability for HSS (High Speed Sync)
3. High output
4. Bare bulb capability

Here is one I have been looking at : https://www.ebay.com/itm/YONGNUO-YN686EX-RT-TTL-HSS-Flash-Li-ion-Battery-charger-for-Canon-EOS-Camea/391882700773?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l9372

and, another - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Flashpoint-StreakLight-360-Ws-Flash-with-Blast-Power-Pack-AD360-SL-360K1/371806018639?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l9372

Godox…

TT350N...$84
TT685N...$110
V860IIN...$179

The first 2 use AA rechargeable batteries, the 3rd uses a proprietary Lithium battery for more capacity and better cycle times.

I use the Sony version of the first two and had the V860IIN when I was shooting Nikon. I just about retired my SB800 and 900 after getting the Godox. All the features, more power, radio trigger, and a fraction of the cost.

Thanks for your reply. I have a Sony A77 11. I ordered and tried the GODOX 860IIN, could not get it to sync with the camera. Were you able to sync the 860IIN to your Sony? If not too much trouble maybe you can explain how you did it. Thanks.

I love my SB400, but you have to remember several things about it. It's no longer manufactured, therefore what you buy, you have to find used. It's not very powerful, although it's adequate for a lot of situations - certainly better than a pop-up (which the D500 doesn't have anyway). It can't be used in commander mode or as a slave without an additional transmitter and receiver. There are no controls on the unit, only an on/off switch.

That said, it's a great little speedlight and a joy to carry. It's the only piece of camera equipment that I own that is worth more now than when I bought it.

I often use it on my D500 when I don't need a more powerful or sophisticated flash.

I have to give a shout out for Metz. Metz has been in the flash game for a long time and is still ahead of the camera brands in terms of both quality and features at a slightly lower price. It is definitely, by far, the best (IMHO) brand of flashes when compared to both OEM and 3rd party flashes. Personally I use a Metz Mecablitz 64 - nicest on-camera flash I have ever used and quite powerfull. Take a look - https://www.metz-mecatech.de/en/lighting/flash-units/system-flash-units/mecablitz-64-af-1-digital.html It is about $150 cheaper than a Nikon Sb 5000 with almost double the output and a much nicer and easy to use interface. Obviously full i-TTL and HHS capability
I have to give a shout out for Metz. Metz has bee... (show quote)

BTW - also have D500 and use the Metz with that. For studio/off camera flash I use several Godox/Flashpoint 360 WS TTL units with a Godox R2 wireless controller - really solid but mobile setup and user friendly

I’ll second that. It’s the perfect little light, small, and it comes in a cute little form-fitting case. It lives in my everyday bag with the camera and 3 lenses.

I have heard good things about the pairing of the D500 and the SB5000, especially for studio work.

I have an SB900 for sale. PM me if interested.

Good luck!

Buy a couple of cheap $74 Photoolex colander flashes the will work with your Nikon Creative Lighting System built into your camera. I have 3 of these and an old SB800 and they work great. Nikon flashes are way over priced and you will lose / damage a flash pretty quick. So save your money.

I have two SB5000s that I use with my D500. Not only do they work well with just the D500; but also they are great with WR-R-10 radio controller. With the flashes remotely located and wirelessly controlled, you can selectively light subjects 100 feet away. Now of course, the big complaint,. With the high cost of the D500 and the SB5000s, why isn't the radio controller part of the D500 and not an add on. Let's not even discuss the cost of the WT-7. I guess that Nikon's business plan includes making money on the accessories.

The OP has a D500.
No built in flash to control any off-camera units.

Nikon has ALWAYS made money on accessories. Sony ALWAYS makes money on accessories. Canon ALWAYS makes money on accessories.

Kodak would essentially give you a camera so that you would buy their film.
Gillette will almost give you a razor if you will buy their blades.
