Three different varieties.

Rivera,
I loved your rafting/kayaking shots the other day and like the merganser photos too. I was lucky to get shots of two of the three over the past couple of weeks. I've got to keep my eyes open for the Common Merganser, which I have yet to capture.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks jak. The common variety is the most common around here. (sorry about the bad pun). The hooded are the ones I least often see. If you are ever out my way I will be happy to tell you where you are most likely to see the commons.

Thanks. So where is "out my way"? I'm in Southern California. As for hooded mergansers, I had never seen them until this year. In the past two weeks I have seen them twice, at two separate locations. The first was an immature...probably male. The second was a pair, male and female, in a canal overhung with branches. Unfortunately, though I got a good look, they were moving away from me. I'll keep looking.
I am in Idaho, close to the border with Utah.
Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind. Common mergansers are supposed to be found here, but we may be to urban for their taste. Have a great day!

Make that “...too urban for their taste.”
