After an early morning drop off at the airport yesterday, thought I'd drive up to the NWR at Merritt Island and see what's transpiring. After what I thought would be a beautiful day with the sunrise over the marshes and the Assembly building, but once the sun rose above the horizon and the temp rose about 2 degrees, it became total fog with an foggy overcast for about 3+ hours. Drove both Black Point Drive and Biolab Road and not a lot of migratory birds yet but I expect they'll be here soon with all the cold weather up north. Shot a few birds (Kingfisher, Egret and Hawk) were all over 100+ yds, only ones close were the pelican & scrub jay and the obligatory Florida gator (I always like this view)..
No sun, grey skies and foggy. Oh well, nothing great in the photos but with gas at $2.19/gal I can easily drive the 1+ hour every day from where I live and take/practice more.
I will add that the Reddish Egret has to be one of the most entertaining of all wading birds. If you're in the area and out photographing, take the time to just watch them, great entertainment. Their antics in catching/chasing fish are amazing. This bird never came any closer than about a 100 yds so I really couldn't get close enough to get great photos but watching this bird with binoculars for a good while, smiling all the time.
